Hi, I am looking at buying a 1999 268 Islander. Apparently the deck has been replaced due to fibreglass rot emanating from the stringers. I have been told that this is a common problem in Islanders of this vintage. Is this correct and does the rot appear elsewhere in this model.

Regards, Greg

The fiberglass doesn't rot per se but it can get wet and swell. The wood in the stringers and/or deck rots from water intrussion. If the stringers and deck were rotten but only the deck was replaced, you will have issues.
If the deck was replaced but not correctly, you could also have issues. You need to see if you can inspect under the deck ( tough to do). Check that the underside of the deck is sealed (epoxied) and look for stringer damage

I have 1996 islander that had the same problem. I had it fixed for around $300. It is now stronger than ever. Just make sure to keep every thing sealed & watertight and you shouldn't have another problem.
