    Proper steps for compression test

hey thanks for the advice. Everything checked out with 130 pounds across all six cylinders. I got crazy and spent $81 for the quality mightyvac compression kit. My head gaskets are leaking, but it looks like I’m in good shape otherwise. Just wanted to triple check in case any of you had seen it...

    Proper steps for compression test

Im compression testing a carbureted 2 stroke Yamaha 175 hp outboard on my Grady. I just wanted to triple check instructions so I don’t mess anything up. It seems I can adequately disable ignition by pulling the kill switch lanyard. Is that correct? Then perhaps I advance the throttle in order...

One clean spark plug, 5 dirty. Why?

And the photo evidence that I’m a bozo.

One clean spark plug, 5 dirty. Why?

Ok I now realize that the slight salt build up along my head gasket is very likely from a leaking gasket. I never thought much of it because it happened so gradually. I thought it was just salt building up along the external edge. Like most of you, I have a job and kids and other demands beyond...

One clean spark plug, 5 dirty. Why?

Good to know. That’s what’s tricky with boats…it’s hard to anticipate exactly what will break down next. Replacing fuel lines is cheap and easy.

One clean spark plug, 5 dirty. Why?

The inspection camera is brilliant. I have one for plumbing. Thanks

One clean spark plug, 5 dirty. Why?

Ok I’m officially a dummy. I’ve been yelled at before, so you’re not going to hurt my feelings. I mistakenly believed my motor fell under the category of ox66…but apparently I was wrong. To be perfectly clear, this is a carbureted (3 of them), 2 stroke, 175TXRT, 175 hp, from 1995. I solemnly...

One clean spark plug, 5 dirty. Why?

Great info. Thanks. Head gaskets look like one of those things that are easy 99% and a nightmare 1%. I’ll start there I apologize if I was unclear or confused about outboard model. This is a 2 stroke 1995 175 hp saltwater 6 cylinder. Model 175TXRT. Yamaha of course. I suspect I could have a...

One clean spark plug, 5 dirty. Why?

Ok. Thanks for the info. A head gasket does make some sense. Water seeps in a steam clean explodes the cylinder. Uggghh. This boat has never left me stranded, but at 30 years old, more stuff is starting to go. The need to pump the throttle on a cold start still puzzles me.

One clean spark plug, 5 dirty. Why?

Changed the plugs because they’re cheap and my 175 HP carbureted two stroke was starting hard. To my surprise, one of the plugs looked super clean, and the other 5 showed normal 2 stroke coloring. What the heck? Scary thing is that I last changed the plugs a while ago and have been running like...

OX66 what does this linkage to flywheel control

correction. Maybe that is the one control rod. Not sure how long this thing was broken or why the engine continued to run without it

OX66 what does this linkage to flywheel control

Sorry. Mode is a 175TXRT. Thank you for the info. I think you’re correct that the linkage controls the timing. What’s wild is that we have owned this boat for five years. She runs great. But on start up it would require us to pump the throttle at high rpm for the first minute at the launch ramp...

OX66 what does this linkage to flywheel control

    1995 2 stroke ox66. 1995TXRT to be exact.

OX66 what does this linkage to flywheel control

175HP OX66 runs like a champ. What is this broken linkage to the flywheel and why would it be broken other than old age. An additional linkage connection is cracked and there is a strange fitment between the parts. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

30 year old Grady and Yamaha...what should I replace before it breaks

Our Tournament 192 is in great shape and shows very little signs of corrosion. But she is now 30 years old and we run 25 miles offshore to the islands. The 2 stroke Yamaha 175 OX66 is low hours (like 300) and runs like a champ. I was hoping guys could share some things they wish they had...
