Is anybody running a 248 / 258 with a single 300? I would be interested in knowing how the performance is. I had a 248 with twin 150 2-stroke and thought the performance was quite good. Just curious how a single 300 might stack up against that.

If you are looking for fuel burn and speed at specific engine rpm, email GW. They have this info available. Another option is to look at freedom 255 numbers. They wont be too far off.

I have a journey 258 with single 3.3 liter f250. Around 39-40 mph top speed. Cruise at 4600-4900 maybe 28-32 mph give or take Fuel load. Bottom paint ,hardtop, Curtains, full gas, and lots of Fishing and kids junk in the cabin. I would think 4.2 liter f300 would give you 3-5 mph better at all rpm’s...

Hi, twin 150 HP 4-S would be over 900 lbs and the singe 300 HP 4-s about 600 lbs. Does that 250 - 300 pounds additional weight cause any concerns with flotation and the ability of the scuppers to be above the waterline when the boat is loaded up with geat and / or people ? I have read about some scupper-under-water issues with other GW models in this size range and wondering how the 248 Voyager compares. Thanks for any info.

The issue I had with the single 248 was the bow riding high and poor ride because the bow wasn't down far enough in the water unless I had the engine trimmed almost fully down. I don't know if it was because of the 5" longer outboard shaft (30" single vs 25" twins) or if it was weight. Due to that experience, I'd be hesitant to go with 150 4 strokes on a 248. If you did, Mercury 150s would be my only consideration. I don't think you'll have scupper issues at rest even with the 150s.
If I were to do twins on a 248, I'd look hard at Mercury 115s. Wet weight with props would be around 680 lbs.
Many would say that isn't enough power, but I'm confident you'd be pleasantly surprised. Merc actual HP is always on the top end of the allowable rating - that would put them around 125-130 HP each. That and at a collective 4 liters of displacement would give you torque like that of a 4.2 Yamaha or 4.0 Suzuki that makes as much as 300 HP.

I had a 258 many years ago. Repowered with a Yamaha F300. Was doing the Great Loop at the time, so dealer recommended 15.25" x 19 pitch prop since we were doing a lot of mid-range cruising. I thought the combination was great. Hole shot was good. Mid range was great. Top end was only about 44 mph, but that was not a concern for me. The kicker is we commonly saw 3 mpg on the Yamaha gauge. Occasionally I would measure actual usage and the gauge would be within 5-10%.
