Anybody have estimates on replacing canvas on a 33 Express (or any other model for that matter)? I just got a quote of $3400 to replace the side and rear curtains and trying to guage how this stacks up as well as what the factory will charge (haven't called them yet).

Great question, I'd like to know too..
Did your quote include new isinglass/ Clearview also?

What year is the boat?
There are fabricators who made the canvas for Grady. They usually can make the panels using original patterns. Generally they are not allowed by Grady to do so for boats under 2(?) years old. For those you have to go to Grady direct or an independent canvas shop.

As to whether your quote is reasonable is hard to say but it is in the ballpark I think. Price varies depending on the material used (both canvas and clear plastic)

A shop probably will not install the snaps since without the original patterns, it is difficult to get them accurately located. You have to do the snaps or you have to have a canvas shop do the fitting.

Cost will depend on the material and your location. The estimate seems in the ballpark. I would get a couple of other quotes from local shops.

I am in a cold climate (San Francisco) and we very rarely rolled up the side panels.
Accordingly, when I re-did my enclosure, for the side panels, I opted for a non opening "track to track" installation of Makralon (sp.). Track to track means there are tracks at the top and bottom of the panel (no snaps which are inherently loose). It's drum tight and I couldn't be happier.

The smaller curved panels on the sides of the windshield are made of stratoglass because Makralon doesn't like being curved alot. For my aft panels, I opted for solid vinyl because 100% of the time I use my 330, these three panels get rolled up and vinyl sheet, as you know, is far easier to roll up than anything with a section of clear panel in it.

None of this was cheap but I love how it turned out. I recall paying about $6,500.
So, depending on what you want, $3,400 (for ~half a full job) doesn't strike me as high in this market.

Location?

I ask, because I have a person in Gloucester, MA and she is very reasonable.

On the Makralon side panels, I am curious what you used for track on the bottom of the panels? I assume that the top has the awning track/Keder rail in a pretty straight line, but I can’t see how you would slide the top and bottom at the same time. Maybe a zipper in the bottom track that then connects to the bottom of the panel?

>>> Yes. Just look at any high end yacht (such as Viking to name one). This is how it's done.
In my installation, the zipper might be on the top track. But let me say it's drum tight. Snaps can't compete with this type of install.

Check A&J Canvas in Vanceboro NC. They made if for GW. Send them your original, they copy it and send a new one out. Same material as OEM.
Your price seems reasonable to me if for the same grade material.
