Transom Rebuild - The Saga Begins

Why the heck wouldn't that be encapsulated at time of build? Makes no sense to me. Is there a Grady White rep on here that could answer that question?

Can you make the top lift-offable? Like a scaffold assembly? Lift off place rear of cockpit and lift on at the launch. Or even hinge on the rear most support pipes.

    transom - is this structural?

Yes, it provides additional rigidity to the transom as @seasick says. Much like the same way a piece of 1 x 2 will strengthen a shelf when fastened at a 90 degree angle. If anything, I would suggest adding another one to give the transom even more strength.

    Grady white 228g soft spot

Do a tap test, also known as sounding, take a smooth face hammer and lightly tap the outside surface of the transom in a 4" rectangular pattern across the entire transom. You will hear a pinging sound if the transom is solidly adhered to the outside skin and a dull thump if not.

Waiting for the shoe to drop

Better hope that it drops from a relatively low height, wooden shoes can hurt.;) Conversely, you could realize that with practice comes competency and this trip was a result of that. Glad to hear you had a good outing.
