I have the same unit .I always run on manual and never had that problem.I do loose bottom in less than 4`and that has alway bothered me, so I slow down in skinny water.

Yes you do have to get used to backing up the 228 and tilting the engine does help.I have a 1998 and it is set up for a 2 stroke.The battery on the starbord side is easy to get to and remove,but the other side is a PITA because of the oil reservoir is in the way. :wink:

When I bought my 228 I had a Chevy 1500 4X4 with a 305 ci engine 373 rear and tow upgrade .The truck did ok on flat ground ,but when going up steep grades and hills it squalked a bit..I also added a set of air spings to the rear witch made a big difference on how the rig handled and took away...

I never have trusted those things,if fact I once ran out of fuel due to a faulty one.Get yourself a floscan or a similar unit,that way you will always know how much fuel is in the tank along with what you are burning per hourYou will be able to trim your engine and trim tabs to get the most out...

I got mine at a West Marine Store .At the time I was wondering how that pump could push that much water out of a 3/4" hole.I would go out and see if I could see the pump and get the model #,but I just had my rotator cuff repaired Tuesday so I`m not about to do that.

That particular model was on sale and it was only a few bucks extra.I really didn`t need one that large because my boat lives on a trailer beside my house with the drain plug out. :wink:

Last summer I replaced my live well and bilge pumps.On my bilge pump I went with a Rule 2000 gph and it had a 3/4" fitting .My oridginal pump was an 1100 gph.

My engine is a 1998 salterwater series OX66,and I concider it as a very reliable trouble free engine.The only way that I would repower[$18K or more]is if it were cost effiecent to do so and I`m no where near that point. :wink:

I have the same setup as you.I don`t keep a log so what I say is from memory.Also the first thing I added to my boat was a floscan,not so much for the mileage factor but to know exactly how much fuel I had in my tank.I trim and throttle while watching the gauge to get the best rpm`s at the best...
