Looks Like I'm the Newest Member to the Club-Transom Restoration Begins

Wow! That all looks great! Maybe I should have mine hauled up to SC. It would probably still be cheaper than having it done down here in SWFL. I am going to seriously consider that, when I have time to get back to this project.

Replace Fridge with AC. What challenges to expect?

@ttles714, I looked at that as well. It would have fit, but there were three reasons that I didn't go that route... 1. Primarily, because it took a lot of the very limited storage space in the boat. 2. It would have been harder to route the vent hose to the aft berth. 3. I figured it would be...

Replace Fridge with AC. What challenges to expect?

@ttles714, I'll have to defer to Rob, but we are talking oranges and tangerines here. He has a Sailfish 282 and I have a Marlin 30. From what he described, he doesn't have enough room to install the A/C behind the stairs.

Replace Fridge with AC. What challenges to expect?

Rob, I hear you on wanting to have it figured out beforehand! I could have done it in probably half the time, if I did, but I knew better. I have done way too many boat projects in the past to think that it would go according to plan! :) It depends on how the unit (in particular the intake)...

Welcome to the Transom Club... Need help in SW FL

That is a good thought. I wasn't sure sure if that would be a better time or worse time, because the migration of everyone from the north starts to head down here.

Welcome to the Transom Club... Need help in SW FL

Thanks, @ddog. I am just trying to find anyone who can take time to call me back at this point! I don't have a trailer, so getting there by water would definitely help. I appreciate you getting the info for me!

Welcome to the Transom Club... Need help in SW FL

@JMAT, I have not yet (just haven't had a chance yet, life has gotten in the way). I thought they would be the expensive ones, but maybe that is a bad assumption. I'll give them a shot this week. Thanks for the recommendation!

Welcome to the Transom Club... Need help in SW FL

Thanks, @Late Again Grady. Hmmm. If I can get it done for $5k, then it might be worth a ride up to Myrtle Beach on a trailer! :) The $15k estimate was for Coosa, so I was thinking that may be part of the expense, but your estimate blows that theory.

Welcome to the Transom Club... Need help in SW FL

@PointedRose, everyone here seems really busy right now, so that may be part of it. I can't even get 75% of the people I called to call me back. I was expecting in the range of $5k to $7.5k, but not $15k.

Thanks, Bob. Just out of curiosity, about how much was it?

Welcome to the Transom Club... Need help in SW FL

Well, I think I am going to be the newest member of the transom club. I am looking to get estimates, and I either get no response or the one that has responded estimated $15k to replace it. Does anyone have any recommendations on companies that may be able to do transom work in the SW FL area...

Replace Fridge with AC. What challenges to expect?

Rob, Yes, I added a new pickup and a new discharge. The discharge was super easy to do solo with a 1" hole saw and a tube of 3M 4200. The pickup really wasn't that bad either... I just hate drilling below the waterline! Good question about the air return. There will be about a 1" to 2" gap...

Replace Fridge with AC. What challenges to expect?

Rob, No problem at all! I am happy to help. Yes, that hole in the fiberglass is the cutout for the refrigerator. That is the only way to access that space in the Marlin. There is a bulkhead between it and the water heater just to the aft of it. I have not yet cut the hole for the return vent...

    Marlin 300 Fridge

I don't know what the original specs were for the '96. Mine was a new installation, as opposed to a replacement, which is good and bad. I went with the Mermaid Air 9,000 BTU unit for a couple of reasons: 1. The footprint is the same as their 6,000 BTU unit, and considerably smaller than other...

I guess that could be better or could be worse. I am fearful that I am going to have to do the same thing in the not too distant future. Good luck! I hope it goes well.

Replace Fridge with AC. What challenges to expect?

$13k??? Wow. The only words I can think of to describe that have 4 letters in them. That is either someone who doesn't want the work or is trying to take advantage of you... or both. I just installed a 9,000 BTU Reverse Cycle MermaidAir in a 1996 Marlin 30 for less than $3k. I put it behind the...

Sorry to see that you are having to go through that. I am almost afraid to ask... how much is the estimate? Also, are they putting new plywood in it, or are you going with a different (non-rotting) material? Good luck!

    Marlin 300 Fridge

I am not sure what year you have, but I can tell you that the cutout on a 1996 Marlin 30 is really tight in all 3 dimensions. Mine is out right now (had to remove it to install an Air Conditioner behind the steps), and I am considering converting the space to storage. I'd be curious to see what...

Moving the anode/grounding plate on a Marlin 30

It looks like the anode/grounding plate on a 1996 Marlin 30 is in a bad place. It seems that most dry storage racks are about 30-36" wide, and that is right where the anode is. Mine was in REALLY bad shape, when we got it earlier in the summer, and now it is about gone after a summer of going in...

    High Pitched Alarm Marlin 280

And, if you can find used Garmins, you could save some money. I have a 5212 and a 4208 (not sure exactly how old either are), and the engine interface is on both of them.
