    GW 265EX anchor line capacity

We frequently anchor in 200-300' with 600' of 3/8" Brait spliced to 20' of 1/2" chain shackled to a 13 pound danforth. We sometimes overnight in 200' of water with winds up to 20 knots. We also carry a 7 pound Fortress with 200' of 1/2" three strand and 10' of chain as an emergency backup. We...

    NOAA Saltwater Fishing Registration

Thanks for the info. I just registered through December 2011, personal and for hire, seemingly for free. We'll have to see if something else is needed next year. Larry

    Winter Storage Rates

$950, includes haul, pressure wash, winterizing, shrink wrap, inside battery storage and charging, recommission in spring. I used to be like you, spend the money with the dealer, made me feel better. But, their work is often no better, nor valid for warranty, than other qualified people.

Gas Tank Level with Winter Storage

Ditto fishtales. I've stored my boat full some years, empty others. Always with Startron. Never had a problem. Do we think fuel will be more or less expensive in April?

    2stroke vs 4stroke

Agreed, it seems like a ton of money for what turns out to be very little work. And I agree it may be more cost effective to wait for something to break. But, I charter and it seems more responsible to do everything recommended for preventative maintenance.

    2stroke vs 4stroke

My 4 stroke runs great, don't care for 2 stroke noise and smell. I do like the look of the white E-Tecs on a Grady, but a white engine of any brand would look good too. When calculating total cost of ownership include about $1,650 per engine for 1,000 maintenance on the Yamaha V6 4 strokes.

    Pursuit vs Grady

Gary, I agree also. I'd be in line to buy a 34' Marlin.

    Pursuit vs Grady

One big plus for Pursuit - windows in the cabin. It's a big deal when you travel a lot and want to see what's going on around the harbor in the middle of the night without going up on deck. One big plus for GW - the Pursuits are just a little too pretty if you're a fishing fanatic.

    Engine Failure - 2005 Yamaha F250

end of story....the surveyor changed his tune when speaking with the dealer. together they agreed it was a failed seal that ruined the lower unit. live and learn......check your mechanics work no matter how reputable the dealer because proving fault is nearly impossible. on a brighter note...

    Engine performance

The notion that normal operation, anywhere from idle to WOT, will cause an engine to overheat is nonsense. Modern 4 strokes are engineered to be bullet proof and immune to anything we can throw at them within reason. If you're getting an overheating shutdown something's wrong with the sensors...

    Perko Masthead Light Flickering

Bill, I had non-stop problems with my Perko masthead light. Finally I just replaced it with an LED. It took a little work to get the new light's tube to mesh with the OEM tube (sleeve and rivets) but I have not had any more problems in 2+ years. BTW, I also replaced my forward navigation...

    anchor chain

All the science and practical experience I'll ever need to know about anchoring was in "The Complete Anchoring Handbook" by Alain Poiraud. Many factors go into staying put on any bottom in any weather, including seabed characteristics, wind, waves, currents, etc. and this book covers them all...

    Engine Failure - 2005 Yamaha F250

Well, here's what may be the closing chapter in the story. My insurance company (travelers) agreed the failure might be covered if it was the result of a fouled line so they had the old lower unit surveyed. The professional surveyor's opinion was that the unit was never refilled with oil when...

    Armrest Deterioration

    Engine Failure - 2005 Yamaha F250

Bob, The $4k price is for 100% new and associated labor, shipping, etc. A Yamaha factory rebuilt is about $700 less. An SEI rebuild is only $800 but I'm wary of that approach. I'm opting for a brand new one since the engine has "only" 1,100 hours. All the lower unit plugs were intact...

    Engine Failure - 2005 Yamaha F250

And the doctor says........lower unit failure. Labor and parts = $4,000. Does that number sound in the right ball park?

    Boat Vibration

GEO, One alternative for inspecting hard to see spaces is your digital camera. Before I bought my boat I reached my hand as far into every nook and cranny and took lots of pictures. When back home on my computer I could zoom in on any questionable objects. Sort of a colonoscopy for your...

    Engine Failure - 2005 Yamaha F250

We spent an awesome day fishing in the Gulf of Maine on Jeffreys and Platts banks yesterday but 5 minutes into the ride home something broke in the motor or lower unit. Six hours and 30 miles later SeaTow pulled us into Fort Popham. Thank goodness for my membership, right? Anyway, my F250...
