Current Charts of 'Big Bend' Area of Florida

These three full-size paper charts cover, approximately, Steinhatchee to Tarpon Springs, Florida. The charts are 11407, 11408 and 11409 and all are dated from early 2022. I recently carried them with me doing this segment of the Great Loop. I also practised a little compass navigating on them...

    Advice on a 282 Sailfish

Where we live in West Palm Beach, we have several marine bedding options nearby. We took the Grady mattresses to them (E.J. Schraeder) so they could make an exact fit with 4" pillow tops. Now we just go with the pillow tops. Makes it easier to get to the storage areas below the cushions as...

    Advice on a 282 Sailfish

First, congrats on buying a great boat. A good compromise between fishing and cruising. A 2007 282 for us here. Also no trailer. But we take some long distance boat trips every year. There are many folks who make their living trailering boats. For example, last year, the guy we use trailered...

    MFD's

One 12" screen is the biggest we could fit. I prefer that to two smaller screens. Especially when navigating in unknown waters. While fishing at home it is usually on split screen of sonar and temp. I've gotten used to seeing a smaller section of sonar. The idea of a backup did concern me...

Refrigerator - AC Only or AC & Battery

"I do have the temperature control knob on the inside, back, top, right. I did not know I can turn off the fridge with that knob!" Congrats on your Sailfish. I also have the 2008 which had the 12v only fridge. Assuming we had the same model fridge, that temp control wheel in the fridge is also...

    The New Guy

John: Congrats on the Sailfish. Following up with on what Seasick said about getting the garden hose well down into the water tank to let the water pressure do some cleaning. My boat stays on a rack and I'm sure they wouldn't be happy with me to cut the end of a hose, which I think would be...

Replacing Bennet Actuators Requires "Set No." From Grady

This may be common knowledge to others, but was a lesson to me. Long story short, I called Bennett for the correct part number on a replacement Bennett actuator for my 2007 Sailfish. Burt, who was very helpful, said I needed the "set number" from Grady White. As Burt explained it, Bennet...

    Air Condition

Yes. I believe that is the factory option, although I can't say that I know that for a fact. Looks a heck of a lot easier to get to than where I put mine! The next question is, how is access to cooling water and electricity? Rob

    Air Condition

Agree, it isn't an option any longer. But it was an option beginning in 2008 and into at least 2011. I don't know how far past 2011 it went, if at all. The factory is pretty good at providing help. They even came up with a plumbing schematic on my 2007 Sailfish when I did my AC. They likely...

ok - this is silly ... cup holders question

Bully, you got me thinking about my cup holders. I have one favorite coozie that I looked at closely this morning. Turns out, it seems that my cup holders are designed for this style of coozie. It is hollow plastic that holds the can surrounded by insulating foam. A bit of the plastic can holder...

How to embed videos in posts?

Just recently completed last leg of the Loop, from St. Marks home to West Palm Beach. A friend from St. Louis joined me. He is not a water person at all. He was the photographer and took more videos than I would have. And everything was on his phone, so I did not do the daily posting that I...

    Air Condition

Eggy: You may want to post this in the Tips and Modifications Sections to get more exposure. I just recently installed a 6500 btu unit in my Sailfish. Maybe easier to do than a Gulfstream. But I did recently see a photo of a Gulfstream with the factory installed AC. The unit sat just aft of the...

Kentucky: What size are those black socks in your photo? They look bigger than the 60" that I use? Tx, Rob

    Filling Freshwater Tank....WTF?

FWIW, for my 258 Journey, I had to devise a 1/2" hose attachment of a couple of feet that would penetrate the fill line. And I had to open the hose spigot just part way, never full open or it would just overwhelm the fill line and spray back out at me. With that, the tank would fill up every...

    '86 Gulfstream 232,

Agree with both of the above. It is well worth knowing what you're buying - or avoiding. Or even having documentation to negotiate a fair price.

    Cleaning the head properly

If your head area has a sink with a pull-out faucet with sufficient reach (I'll admit I know nothing about the 235), you could fill the toilet bowl with fresh water prior to using the pottie. You could leave the toilet's seacock closed on those 5-7 days a year in saltwater.

Do I suck or is it my boat?

John: My two cents - and that's what it's worth! When seas get over 2', I find that my 282 is sensitive to wave period, or the space between waves, as much or more than wave height. Wave height can, to some extent, be compensated for with engine trim and trim tabs, as you know. And as Skunkboat...

Anyone use a drift sock on an 18ft?

A Lindy 60" Drift Sock is what I used to use on my 20' Grady. I tried a number of brands and found this one to be the easiest to use and hold up the best, at least without going up to the big parachute drogues. They are not the cheapest. I used to find them for around $50. Now I believe they go...
