Not sure how the motor could be running and showing 0 RPM. More likely a stall, which started the alarm, and then the 0 RPM makes sense.

The big detail I overlooked in the OP was comparing performance from a 3.3l 250 to a 4.2l 250 The 4.2 l has a ton more torque and I'd expect it to perform a bit better than a 3.3l. The difference between 48 and 55 can probably be explained as the apples to oranges comparison of the two motors.

I'm skeptical. While it would work for the space the generator occupies, it seems that it offers a false sense of security, as the CO could migrate away from the generator and into the cabin area, for instance. So while the area around the generator has no build up of CO, the cabin could.

As other's alluded to, these are often wired to an accessory switch on the switch panel. Make sure that any accessory switch is "on". I can't tell you the number of times the aux switch has been inadvertently switched off by me or a crew member.
