Although it seems that you're on the likely path, I'll ask anyway. Is there a seacock on the scoop and is it kept closed when not in use? Nice boat, by the way. We enjoyed ours. Even took it to Bimini a couple of times - in our (much) younger days!

My Garmin works really well flush-mounted at the dash under the Sailfish hardtop. Also seems to give great position data to the autopilot. Like Coastboater said, try it. You can always add the GPS/heading sensor later.
