    Help with fuel consumption please

I may be able to offer a little insight. Please keep in mind with the older boats, I may be a little off in my numbers. Our 2006 Marlin with twin 2006 Yamaha F250 outboards does a little better than 1mpg on a typical loaded for bear canyon trip (also holds roughly 300 gallons). When we troll...

    Marlin w/w fluid tank

Hinmo, I'll try to explain how it works on our boat. If I fill the fresh water tank, leave the pump off and open the windshield water valve, nothing comes out. If I fill the fresh water tank, turn the pump on for a minute then turn the pump off, a little water will come out when I open the...

282 sailfish vs 30 marlin interior space?

BFT, I'm guessing the Marlin aft birth is wider than the Sailfish as the beam is also about a foot wider, but I'm not certain. As far as two adults fitting in the aft birth, it would be tight, good for a night or two a year, but not on a regular basis. In my mind the aft birth is halfway...

282 sailfish vs 30 marlin interior space?

BFT, my boat is 60 miles away at the moment but I can offer some input. I'm 6'2" and my son is 6'5". He has no problem fitting in the aft berth of our 06 Marlin, as a matter of fact he and I prefer it as compared to the forward V berth. I would guess as long as your 6'8" or less you could...

    what does this wire do

Couple of ideas. Could be designated wire for VHF radio, could be for a second (or third) small fuse panel that would supply your electronics?

Can you really waterski behind the Freedom 285?

I've water-skied behind our Marlin. Used a 75 foot rope and it certainly was doable, but certainly less than ideal. As others have mentioned there are certainly better choices. BTW, I was on two skis, never was able to master slalom skiing. Our kids (now adults) also have ridden in a tube (75...

    Marlin w/w fluid tank

Definitely comes from the freshwater tank. Most likely comes off the tubing in the bathroom. Must turn on freshwater pump on to wash windshield.

    Block

Had a 1990 Yamaha 70hp two stoke that developed a small leak in a very similar area. The was about fifteen years ago, which would have made the outboard roughly fourteen years old. Ours leaked where the thermostat bolts to the block. Previous owner made repair with some sort of epoxy, never...

Will your Grady float if capsized or swamped?

Like many on this site I followed the rescue mission closely and did a lot of thinking. We have a life raft, epirb, hand held radio, two mounted VHF with separate antennas, more type 1 life jackets than required, ditch bag, etc. I've been heading offshore fishing on my own boats for over...

    Yamaha F-250s...... Repower?

Sorry, F250 pros: very reliable, good on fuel, especially when trolling for tuna or marlin, easy to get parts, not too hard to work on, props readily available in many configurations. Cons: expensive to purchase, expensive to have installed, wiring harness most likely will need to be...

    Yamaha F-250s...... Repower?

I've got old school 2006 F250's on our 2006 Marlin. Very happy with them overall. My son and I were speaking about it today, we have never had an alarm go off since we owned the boat (bought it used in February 2008). If we can afford it we will re-power with Yamaha or Suzuki 300 outboards...

    Gulfstream bracket setback?

Was not aware that they used 30 inch shafts on the Gulfstream. In 2000 I'm almost certain they used 25 inch shafts. Your performance does appear to be lacking. Is the boat painted, if so is the bottom smooth? I'm very surprised your motor does not spin up any higher, also surprised by your...

    Carburetor

John, I'm not too familiar with i/o engines in boats so take this as a grain of salt....I would think a marinized GM small block should spin up to more like 4200-4500 rpm when properly trimmed, especially with a light load. At 4000rpm I would think your boat would hit about 35mph with a clean...

    Sling Grady 232

Rlash, above you wrote; "I just purchased a new Grady 232 Gulf Stream and will be pier-launching from a crane in Northern California." I am not familiar with this method of launching a boat, but is this a common method in your area? Around here they sling boats often with roughly ten inch wide...

    Marlin Fuel Tanks

I agree with above. Forward tank is forward fill, aft tank is aft fill. On our 2006 Marlin both tanks are about 150 gallons, I not certain but I think the main (forward) is slightly more than 150 gallons.

    Cruising speed

Just a wild guess, but I would think about 25mph. I gather the 454 was more common back then and I suspect the cruising speed would be a little higher, I guess about 27mph. Not sure, but Grady used to have test reports for boats from the 1980's in their archives. I would reach out to them.

    209 Escape top speed

We have a 2002 209 with a Yamaha 200 hpdi. With a light load we can hit 49 mph in relatively calm bay water. We have switched props a few times and raised the engine, I believe we decided on a 15.25" x 19" SWII yamaha prop.

    Marlin higher windshield

I almost certain our 2006 Marlin windshield is slightly taller than the 2004 model, I believe it's about two inches taller.

    23 gulfstream vs 24 offshore

I'll try to keep it short. I owned a used 1988 24 Offshore for about a year, it was powered with a 1988 Evinrude (that we rebuilt) and had a notched transom. I sold the Offshore and purchased a used 1992 24' Explorer with bracket, powered with a 1992 Yamaha 225, then repowered with a 2000...

    Lee Wishbone outrigger mount

When we purchased our Marlin it did not have outriggers. I installed Lee "Seniors" myself ( I think they are actually MX series). Grady was able to send me a sketch that I used to give me the approximate locations for the mounting plates, without it it would have been very difficult. I also...
