150hp on a 20 foot Grady?

Hi all...brand new to this forum, I'm not a Grady owner yet, but I'm looking for a 208 adventurer in the 10- to 15 year old range. My question is, would a 150hp outboard be underpowered for carrying a family of two adults and 3 small children, or do I need to stick to looking for 200hp?

I'd focus on one with a 200....that said, I've run one with a 175 and it did just fine. 150 is fine for cruising but it will be a 38-39 mph boat at wide open throttle.

It depends on what you plan to use the boat for. The 150 will be fine for the load but you will notice some performance degradation when running with a fairly full gas tank. Of course (tongue in cheek), it isn't so much the number of passengers but rather the total weight. I have some fairly 'heavy' fishing companions, and one of them could equal 3 young children:)
With respect to the 200 motor, a 2 stroke will make a noticeable difference but be careful if the boat was repowered with an older 4 stroke. The extra weight will affect performance and more importantly boat trim. With your planned load, that could present a serious issue with water backing up the scuppers.
 
As stated the 150hp is fine and 4strokes will weigh down the transom on older models. The 2 stroke 175-200hp class is perfect motor for this class grady. It wont disappoint.

Agreed with what these guys are telling you. I have a 192 Tournament (an inch or so over 19 feet) with a 200 hp two stroke. It is a perfect combination. I know folks say the 150hp is fine, but I know I would not want to step down to that size 2 stroke on my Grady. These boats are well built tanks. I don't feel as though mine is overpowered with the 200 hp. The 200 2 stroke would be a great setup.
 
I re powered my 89 Overnighter in 2001 with a 175 HPDI. Seems to be the perfect engine weight/horse power ratio for that hull.
