I'm replacing the electric primers with the manual bulbs on my 272 Sailfish. One of my primers stopped working which left the engine dead... To me it isn't worth it to have an electric pump when I can just prime it by hand and know it is likely to never fail again. I added two Yamaha OEM Primer Bulbs in their place. I think they were about $25 each, and the new electric primer (which i don't think is made anymore was over $300). Save yourself the uncertainty of an electric component and get a Yamaha bulb.
As for the placement, it seems that most of the bulbs/primers are after the fuel water separators. Perhaps this is because the separator can't have pressure forced into it, and the pressure from pumping the bulb wouldn't reach the engine? I'm not sure. If you install the primer bulb after the separator, just remember that you shouldn't take the filter off when out of the water or you way not be able to suck a prime back through it with just the bulb. I had that happen once and had to get towed in when I had a single engine boat. Other than that just do shutoff, filter, primer bulb, engine. This seems to be the common way.
