had i not missed out on a good deal on an 96 200 HP ocean pro for 2,000 i wouldnt be doing this lol....

hoist

You can make your own, cant remember the thread size but there are three fine thread holes in the flywheel for lifting, just use fine tread bolts and washers with a piece of chain. Should do the trick

Yea I got the 1996 ocean runner rigged and running for 2k

Good post
You helped Capt.Darado, you told him how to save money, how to lift his motor,
and gently let him know that you got the great deal on the johnson that he missed out on all in the same post.
I'm sorry but I couldn't help but laugh.
Funny stuff!!

okay so the three bolts your talking about are on top of the fly wheel correct? their are no bolts in mine lol this isint looking good at all. and if i get some new ones im not sure how to get the right thread, also should i buy the stainless bolts. and as far as removing this should i leave the main bolt on the fly wheel tightened down just like it is, sorry this is my first time doing this and im a young guy. lol i know you older guys know it all.
sorry for alll the ??'s

dont sweat it about the bolts not being there. on my twin 200's neither flywheel has them, and i dont believe they are supposed to be in there while operating, just used as a lifting point.

cheers,
steve

thanks black grady by the way i like your style on the boat.

my main concern is where to find longer bolts how to get the right thread and what not so i can pull the powerhead off. now with all this being said im really concerned about this, will me using this chain method work for ehat im trying to do. ive got to put alot of lifting pressure to pull this powerhead off. sorry for being complicated just very concerned and dont want to tear anything up. thanks
chris

powerhead

those holes are there just for lifting, no bolts are left in there...looks like it should, just find some bolts that fit the thread size of the holes..wish I could remember..and use a washer or two with some chain and hoist away. Its designed to be used for that. Dont mess with the center flywheel bolt until you are ready to pull the flywheel..A powerhead like yours can be completly rebuilt with new pistons and bearings minus the crank..which hopefully yours is in good shap(usually don't go bad). For less than 2k..with you doing the powerhead removal and install. Hope you get that machine back in service soon. It will be better than new hopefully. Let me know if I can help any further. I took outboard repair in college and work full time for the fire department and am assigned to the marine units, also my brother is a 10 year coastguard mechanic.

10-4 i appreciate it im gonna give it a shot, and actually im just doing a power-head swap i already have the other one here on a crate. i had it shipped to Houston from Miami and paid i wanna say 1300 shipped....

ill post a pic of the new one. pretty good deal. so im trying to save as much money as possible doing it myself. im still going to have to take it to a mechanic to have it timed and stuff im assuming. so we will see thanks so much

oh and i mean i guess i could fly you down here to just teach me how to do all this stuff. i mean i am young and that is a big reason why im doing this myself is to teach myself a few things and understand an outboard motor

thanks Chris

Hang in there Dorado!

Hello again Young Dude! Did you remember to get you a repair manual for your engine? There is a gold mine of information in one of those books! Those bolts for the flywheel don't have to be that long, just long enough to screw into the flywheel probably 3/4" or so. Might want to take a tap and chase out the threads which will give you a good idea of how deep the those lifting eye holes are. Three short equal length pieces of chain and a small shackle should work nicely. Good Luck! Hang in there buddy! 8)

Those holes are intended to pull the flywheel off the powerhead with a puller. It is fine to lift the powerhead with them. They take 5/16th fine thread bolts.

since you are replacing the powerhead, make sure you take those carbs apart and clean/service them and get them re-sync'd to make sure she's running right. if you take them apart and simply clean them, make sure that they have brown gaskets on on the sides, this was an update that was done because the original black ones were breaking down(so im told). I cleaned all 12 of mine 2 weeks ago and they all looked like they had a sinus infection. Those tiny idle orfices and float bowls were pretty bad.

cheers,
steve

im sure that you would be fine doing the work yourself and then having them adjusted by a pro. hey, start with one and see how it goes. if you get lost or dont remember how it went together, u have 5 others to look at=)

i did them in a bucket so i didnt loose any parts and took pictures so that one extra miller lite didnt put me off track haha. might save you some $$$$, hope it helps!

PS NOTE THE SIZE OF THE IDLE ORFICES....they are 2 different sizes barely noticable by the naked eye

yeah i imagine i can do them myself, my parents own their own buisness and they have all kind of cnc machines and what not, but they also have an ultra sonic parts cleaner that is the ticket. just stick the parts in their and it does all the work, its Amazing.

also i have a part that i wanna replace but i really dont know the name for it, its like a metal bar used for the steering. i will attach a pic here and maybe you can tell what im talking about in the pic.

also i am looking foward to repainting the motor, as far as the lower unit and the mid section... any suggestions on paint and stuff.

thanks chris
