Hello there fellow members I am new at this forum and after 8 years without a boat (our previous boat was a 1990 Robalo 2160 WA), me and my dad just bought a 1991 Marlin 28 with 2009 twin Honda 225´s with very low hours. We paid 30,000.00 usd for the boat and spend an additional 15,000.00 usd re fitting and modernizing the boat (new paint, gelcoat, Led lightning, Underwater lights, new seats and cushion, new fridge, new microwave, new canvas, instaling a TV and bluray, TVHD antenna, new Raymarine A190 with downvison, new electric wiring, mew sound system, installing a lewmar windlass, new honda gauges and dual shit kit, general fiberglass inspection and repairs, new facuet handles, new corain cover in the galley, and other things I cant remember right now) . I really think it looks and feels like a new boat, we put a lot of effort and love in this boat and I think we made a great job . So in total we spent 45,000.00 usd for the gorgeous grady. I have two questions to make to you, I wish you could help me:


1.- Is there really any difference un the hull of the 28 Marlin and the 30 Marlin, because a guy in mt marina owns a 1996 30 Marlin and I really I dont see an diference in the lenght, I even have measured them and I really dont found any difference.

2.- Yesturday I heard about a 2002 Century 32 WA with twin Yamahas 225's just sold for 65,000.00 (with a generator and A/C, my Grady only has the A/C the previous owner removed the generator), so my dad began to have some buyers remorse because he thinks the century is newer and a little bit bigger than our Marlin. I told him not to worry because the Grady has a better space distribution and a better ride in rough waters, and also because we redone al the boat and everything is new (really everything), and also the outboards are newer and with fewer hours, the Grady was the right choice for us. Do you think we made a good choice choosing the Grady instead of the Century???

Century is a piece of shit compared to a Grady. If your boat has no problems with the Tanks, transom or decks, you have a killer set up that can last for 5,000 hours.

Besides all of that stuff you did, I'd change fuel hoses and inspect the fill line, vent line and all of your water lines, bilges, freshwater, raw water and live well.

You guys absolutely should have no regrets, and as mentioned, you got a much better deal, quality and value as compared to the Century!!
 
Oh and as far as any hull difference, I think that starting around 1997, they extended the bottom of the hull so that the running surface is the entire length of the bottom, whereas pre-1997 there's a notch toward the stern so when you look at the Marlin 28 as compared to the Marlin 300, they are the same overall length, but the running surface is slightly longer on the 300 if you look closely underneath. There's probably a minor difference in terms of fuel efficiency and ride, but I would imagine the differences are very minor. I have a '99 Marlin and I've never ridden the pre-97 version.
 
I've never been on a Century, but just from looking at pictures they appear to be a lower quality boat. There's nothing wrong with that, but they don't appear to be in the same league as a Grady or Whaler. Besides, didn't they go out of business about 5 years ago?

Hi,

I own the same boat and I'm on the hunt for twin honda 225's like yours. Are you equiped with some brand of fuel flow meter to provide hard facts on Gph or mpg?

My ole 2 stroke yamaha 200s give me 1.2 mpg on glass days and 0.7 on slower rough ocean days. I've never seen the garmin do better than 1.2...but I don't Rev past 4200 rpms.

No I dont have the flow meter I am looking for some gauges or display that show me that info, do you know some meter I can buy?? But the Hondas are verfy efficient, quiet and have a lot of power, you wont regret about buying Honda.

Depending on the year of your hondas you may be able to NMEA 2000 into the motors and display it on your gps.

I have the garmin fuel flow sensors. They work well.
