I was wondering if anyone knows if I can hang a 4 stroke on my transom. I've got the original Mercury 200 Hp on the boat now and I'm looking to change to a Yamaha 200-225 HP either 2 or 4 stroke. The transom is rock solid. Any help is appreciated.

I would think that is not a good idea...too much weight...call the Customer service number at Grady.

Definitely good advice to call Grady with your question before you do anything. That being said , I have seen older 226's repowered with f 225's but dont know if it's recommended. As far as 2 stroke re power, what does your capacity plate list as Maximum HP ?

I'll give them a call next week. Thanks for the advice.

I'm not sure what the nameplate say's as far as max hp. I'll check next week when I'm at the marina. I don't want to have any problems with the weight so I'll give them a call next week just to be sure. Thanks for your advice also.

Thats roughly an additional 140-170 Lbs added on transom, if I'm not mistaken. Will definitly lower stern some, guessing around 1/2" I removed a single 200hp Johnson and replaced with twin Tohatsu 115s on my Seafarers' notched transom, and it lower stern roughly 2/3". In my case, I was rebuilding transom at the time, and extended the notched height by 3".
You may place your scuppers below waterline, and have to be careful backing down with heavier engine. May be better off with a nice 200 Etec. Better peformance, very efficient, and around the same weight as engine being replaced.

Vero,
Thanks for the input. It sure sounds as if I'm better of staying with 2 strokes. I'd love to get an E-Tec but thats probably out of my price range. I'll probably end up with another Merc or possibly a Yamaha, and stay with a 200 HP.

Before making your choice, why not take the advise of those that say to contact Grady first. I've called them on several occasions, and they are very helpful, and will point you in the right direction.

Are the Etecs more expensive than Mercs and Yamies of the same hp? I thought the 4 stroke Yamaha would cost more than the Etec, but I'm not up on current outboard pricing. I do know my brother in law had a new Yamaha F250 installed on his '98 Seafarer, and it is fantastic. Easy starts, quiet, no smoke, super efficient, and powerful. Changed all my feelings towards 4 stroke outboard technology. Too bad they are so heavy.
