Thinking of repowering have a evinrude 175 runs great , had the boat 10 years very little hours but feel new would be safer ? the transom seems good never had a problem some strees cracks but just in gel coat . debating rebuild , re power ? how would a yamaha 200 work ? 4 stroke is it too heavy ? how do i check transom . thanks larry

I'd determine the max weight for the boat. Then determine the difference between the existing and to-be motor. If under the max and the delta is reasonable (say within 40 lbs?) then I'd examine the transom. One way is to see how much flex there is with the existing motor (place up, rock it and watch the hull). Not scientific but a start. Then check a few areas, maybe remove a drain or some screws and look for evidence of water penetration. Then check the mounting holes when you take off the motor (assuming direct attach to the transom). You are looking at a pretty old hull, If it were me, I'd go less weight and maybe even less HP. The last thing you need is a transom failure with a new engine hanging on it.

Replaced 175 HP 1998 Yamaha Saltwater Series carbureted engine with 150 HP HO Evinrude Etec G 1,Yamaha was the best engine I have ever owned which was five years ,replaced not because of problems just age not the engine but mine .Dealer sold Mercury ,Yamaha and Evinrude discussed options . The HO is rated 165 HP lightest engine same as the 98 engine, 3 years no maintenance ,simplicity of 2 stroke with power on every stroke ,warranty .Had the engine for a few months very pleased ,quicker hole shot ,top speed 40 MPH Yamaha was 32 MPH , fuel savings is substantial Yamaha used 6-7 gallons each fishing trip same 9 trips averaging 3.75 gallons traveling faster as the Etec Sweet spot is between 3500 25 MPH and 4000 30 MPH .Yamaha was tested prior to selling excellent compression replaced seals in lower unit and sold privately $3k . Dealer installed Icon gauges, hydraulic steering and new controls. Next season will install Bennett Trim tabs with Pro Auto Trim for passenger movement and overall trimming. Metallic graphite color makes it a little different too .

I felt the 4 stroke were to heavy especially adding a few heavy weight fishermen ,Not sure if you would be able to find Etec HO but from my experience a G1 Etec 150 HP will have plenty of power unless if your pulling skiers .No smoke much less noise then my old two stroke .I would also recommend adding Hydraulic steering which has made getting into my slip much easier .
