1997 Johson O Runner. Slamming comming at low reves.

Winterized the motor,de-carbed, changed bottom end fluid.
Put the motor in for a test run.....got a slamming noise that you could feel through the boat at 2000 rpms???????
At 3000 to 5000 she ran great!
At idle she started slamming and dieing out?
returned 2 days later in the rain :x and changed out with a rebuilt bottom end....Same problem???????
Adjusted the shift cable till I lost reverse??????
Droped off at shop.
Splines are OK and so is the shift rod length at 26 15-16 inches.
What happened over the winter??

Slamming noise in the motor?? Did the power instantly decrease at the exact time of the slamming? If so, it almost sounds like water in the fuel...

Fuel water separator is clean, new fuel as well.Tank was pumped dry.
I`m thinking clutch dog ?
But 2 lower units doing the same thing???

RQ, what did the motor do when you heard the sound? Did you lose power on the spot or did it keep on kickin', just with a loud noise? Having 2 bad bottom ends at the same time is against the odds.

RR, motor would die at idle when I got the clunk,
In gear at low rpm`s she would just clunk away.

Just in time,
can i measure the cable in any way?
Ball park price on a replacement ?

numbers are stamped on cable

best way is to remove cable

shift with hand

if it clunks still, you got lower unit problems

I`m gonna go PU the boat and give this a shot my self.
It will probably be another month before he will get a chance to look at it being this time of year. I`ll post my results.

Shift cable was out of adjustment. Why it went who knows,but what ever he did,it run`s better than ever.
