Recently made an offer on this Islander. It has original Yamaha 250 Saltwater Series motor with 300 hours. The accepted offering price is $35,000. I am concerned about the age of the engine even with low hours. Boat will be surveyed, but would appreciate comments about the motor and anything else relevant. Thanks.

Very low hours doesn't always = good news.

I assume you made an offer subject to a professional survey of the entire vessel.

If that surveyor is not comfortable doing a full engine (it's an engine, not a motor) assessment, then you should have an independent Yamaha-certified mechanic evaluate the engine. At a minimum, properly done cylinder compression tests, draining and evaluation of the lower unit, perhaps even a borescope, O2 sensors, etc.

The OX66 engines are almost bullet-proof, but lack of maintenance can kill almost anything.

If your offer was not contingent on a professional survey, then disregard my comments and I wish you good luck.

Thanks, ocnsir. Yes, offer is contingent upon marine survey AND a Yamaha cert. tech. survey. I'm new to power boats and just wondering how long an engine might last with good maintenance.
