Hi everyone, Im planning to move up to a 1991 22' 225g tournament with a closed transom and grady bracket. It has a Yamaha1996 l250txru . Our current boat is a 1998 206 overnighter with 2007 150 2 stroke Yamaha. The tournament has been in fresh water only and is superb. I had a survey of the boat and all checks out. We like the openness of the boat because the cabin space goes to waist. The use would be in Delaware bay and just offshore ocean. If we like the boat a repower would be considered. I've given this alot of though and don't like giving up newer power . Im just looking for your thoughts from grady veterans on the move. Thanks for the replys.

Correction our previous boat is a 1989 204 c overnighter. Any responses would be great.

i just went from a 1986 190 tournament with a 120 johnson to a 94 223. so a similar transitionl. i'm perfectly happy to keep the 94 ocean runner on it for my needs, which will not include any offshore use. assuming it is in good condition with good compression, i would not sweat the 96 yamaha. the engine is fairly bulletproof and that is ample power for the hull.

as far as "newer power" goes, unless you buy new, you can't assume you will get better reliability than the 96. the reliability of used outboards tends to level out after a few years and a few hundred hours. there is actually less to go wrong on the 250 than most newer motors, and it is cheaper to fix (and to maintain compared to a 4 stroke).

the one thing you can count on from a newer used non-carbed motor is better trolling and cruising speed fuel economy (if you go down to a smaller displacement 200/225 you can also expect better fast cruising economy). whether it is worth it to do that, and that depends on how many hours you run and how much of that would be trolling. if you burn 5 gph less on average over 100 hours a year, that is $2000/year in savings. but 5gph in savings might be tough to achieve if you troll a lot or have a heavy throttle hand. do the math on a new motor.

Thats some good points. The survey went well the motor has 120 psi on all cylinders and checks out. The transom has 20 percent moisture I guess thats normal. I am just wandering about non CV2 hull and how it handles with the big 250. That seems a little much moter for the age of the hull. Thanks for your input.

i can't say firsthand but i would think a yamaha 2 stroke 250 is fine on that boat. there are lots of old 22' gradys with heavier 4 stroke 250s on them.

when grady built that boat they sold evinrudes and the new evinrude 250 was a 600lb v8 so i think that is why they rated it for 225 for a while. i think the yamaha will be under 500 lbs.

i am curious how it trims though and whether the main tank is under the forward or rear floor hatch though. there was a recent thread on the topic of tank location in the 22 hull.
