87 octane is fine. But if you can get Rec 90, run it to avoid ethanol problems.

Ring Free was designed for Yamaha 2-strokes to reduce carbon build up in the ring lands and upper cylinders. It's a good idea to use it in order to prolong the life of an engine and to maintain performance. Years ago, I used to take apart 2-stroke outboards that had blown up in order to learn why they failed. While they failed for many different reasons, I never saw one with over 100 hr that did not have at least some rings that were stuck. Ring Free is not as important for 4-stroke engines as long as you run Top Tier gasoline.

Add a fuel stabilizer if you use less than one tank of fuel per month or when the boat is stored over the winter.

Here's my formula. I have a 225 V-6 Saltwater Series. Ethanol free 87 octane, Yamaha Ring Free, and a gasoline stabilizer called Pri-G. I have had zero fuel problems in 8 years of ownership, and don't even bother to drain the fuel system over the winter, because the stabilized ethanol free will stay good until spring. Usually starts right up after about 3 or 4 seconds of cranking for the first start of the season, assuming the batteries are good. Forgot to mention that I use Yamalube 2-cycle oil as well. Of all the things I have done over the years, I think the e-free fuel and the Yamalube have had the greatest effect on engine performance. I used to use that Amsoil full synthetic oil, but the start ups and acceleration with the Yamalube seems better than it did with Amsoil. Just be aware that these SSII engines are loud, thirsty, and smoky. Pretty much a normal day for that engine. But, it will definitely get you fishing and home again.

Pennzoil XLF for the oil...have used it for years...it's half the cost of a gallon of Yamalube and - in my experience on multiple motors - smokes less.

E-Free fuel if you can find it...I personally am diligent with Ring-Free and either Sta-Bil or Pri-G with whatever fuel I can find.

How many hours?? There's an 02 sensor on the motor that needs servicing every year. Do that, keep the fuel clean, run 2-micron filters if the boat is old, clean the VST every so often, and run the heck out of it.

My OX66 is 15 years old:
-Regular Ethanol Fuel
-Pennzoil Extended Life oil
-Chevron Auto Fuel Additive during the season (purchased at Costco...big discount)
-Winter- Stor and Go additive(tank is generally 1/2 or less full...fill up with fresh gas before your spring run)

Good luck and enjoy!!!

My OX is about 14 years old. It has used Ring Free it's entire life. I use Penzoil XLF when I can get it on sale. Otherwise I use any TW3 oil that's on sale. Yamalube is too darn expensive.
Only use Stabil during winter storage. No stabilizers during boating season. I normally use Valv Tech gas which is mid range octane at my fueling dock. Using premium is a waste of money. All gas in my area is E10 at a minimum. E15 will most likely damage your motor.
I do not clean my O2 sensor every season. As a matter of fact, I only check it every 4 seasons or so. I believe that the most important thing you can do with SX motors is learn how to read the spark plugs and go from there. If your SX is running well, don't start looking for issues. You can spend unnecessarily money or mess up something that was previously running fine.

There is an argument to be made against using 2 micron filters especially with older tanks and fittings. Eventually all tanks collect some gunk and small particles that would ordinarily pass through the system can clog the 2 micron filters and cause a breakdown. As I understand, Yamaha does not recommend 2 micron filters but again I have been wrong before.

fyi chevron "techron" is naptha. good stuff for a two stroke engine, but seafoam is the same thing and considerably cheaper on a volume basis.

i am interested to see two votes for the pennzoil. i've never seen it here and will want to try it. as someone who runs 50:1 in my old boat, the best non smoking oil i have found is shell nautilus, but there is not a big difference.

Startron claims that it prevents carbon build up. Is it suitable for a Techron, Seafoam, Ring free alternative?

I've been long time Amsoil advocate. The price has gone through the roof and is about $28/gal delivered. Been reading a lot of positive things about Pennzoil XLF. It's cheaper and available at Walmart. I'm very conscious of oil because I premix my OX66's. Amsoil has produced the LEAST amount of carbon on the plugs and 02 sensor than any oil I've used. BUT, I don't know if that is a benefit of using Ring Free religiously or not. Which leads me to the following question:

When considering the lubricating qualities of oil; most 2-stroke oils are the same. The quality oils shine because of reduced carbon build up. If using Ring Free consistently, can one run store brand el-cheapo oil and expect the same results as a quality synthetic oil?

I've read this argument before and, I'm sorry it does not make a bit of sense to me. I would rather have my 2-micron Racors clog than anything down stream. We are "blessed" with ethanol fuel here and I've had to tear into my VST filter screens, injector screens, regulator screens, and more. Since running 2-micron filters I haven't removed the VST's. I do carry spare filters but have never had a problem.

Running racor 2 micron filters. Change every 100 hours.
Startron
Ring Free PLUS!
Ethanol 87 octane

No Issues so far with over 600 hours.

Running higher octane fuels is proven to increase carbon deposits due to cooler combustion temps.
Startron and Ring Free Plus both combat the ethanol corrosive affects as well as emulsify water and allow extended storage.

I was running Amsoil for a couple of years with excellent results. I switched over to Pennzoil when they had a 40% off coupon. I bought enough for a couple of years and running it all last season. It is their semi-synthetic. Ran same in my old 2 stroke OMC Seadrive and this is a good clean burning oil. Good value for the money! Either Amsoil or Pennzoil Semi-synthetic are fine products.

I get your point but wonder if before switching to 2 micron, did you ever have issues with filter or screens plugged down stream from the 10 micron water separator filter?

I was introduced to Pennzoil XFL (actually given a free gallon) at a Bass Master Tournament in Pittsburgh about 12 years ago and since then, I have never used any thing else!!!~ :)
