Found a real clean '01 226 on trailer with yamaha 200. Owner says 30mph at 3800rpm. Sound right? I don't want an underpowered boat. Asking $28,500.

30 mph at 3800 sounds a little optimistic. Most 226s I see have a 225 on them. A 200 should run fine though. I run a 200 on a 20 Adventure plenty of power but of course a 226 is heavier. I think a 200 is minimum power for a 226 but if the motor has a four blade prop who knows.

Maybe check out the thread below about the 228 with the spun prop..there is a post from a guy running a 200 hp motor on his 228 with a four blade prop...seems like he is getting decent performance and is happy.

I would also question that performance. Maybe with little fuel and single person.

My 228 has a 225HP and in smooth water I would be around 4300 RPM to run 30MPH.

Sounds a tad high. Mine is a 1984 with a 200 carbureted yammy. I think my hull weight is a bit less, although i have a 228, closed transom + bracket, so it might be close if this boat is a cut down transom version. I'd say I'm more around 4200 to get to 30mph. If he's swinging a 17 pitch 3 blade prop and doesn't have some odd amount of slip then it should be about the same. This also depends on the gear ratio of the lower unit. 200hp is adequate unless you're typically running with a very heavy load. I had 8 adults on mine last summer, planed off fine and got us where we were going. Wouldn't want to do it every time out though. Sure cut through the chop well with people sitting on the bow helping get the nose down!

Here's the boat- looks real clean. It's 2 hours away from me. Freshwater boat, garaged, and only 225 hours on it! That's the big pull for me. But is $28,500 too much for a 226/200hp OX66, and trailer? NADA has the boat as $12k, motor at $5k, didn't look up the trailer. But of course NADA rarely agrees with what some brands sell for.

That guy on the other post is me. If I wrote 200, I made an error. I have a F250 with a 4 balder on it. I am with Strikezone on the speed rpm thing as I am around 30 at 4000 RPM. That RPM seems really low for the speed claimed, but who knows my boat has a hard top and all the bells and whistles, maybe a soft top 226 lightly loaded could do it?

When I had mine it would do 30 at 3900. However, I had a 250 and no hardtop.

I talked with the owner- he says it in fact does 30mph at 3800rpm- no hard top. He also had a special "double cup" prop purchased from an propeller shop in VA beach that added 2mph to the cruise. I forgot what kind it was. I'm going to check it out tomorrow if another potential buyer doesn't look at first. I'll know tomorrow at 9am if I'm clear to check it out.

I owned a 2001 226 with a 200 HPDI. If you buy this boat, look for a Merc Mirage Plus 15.25x17 prop.

Mine had a hardtop, which added 450 lbs and some wind resistance. 4000 rpm got me right around 30 mph. Top end will be 41 mph, but you have to trim it way out to get it. It's almost like an overdrive kicks in when you trim the Mirage Plus up.

Great boat...and looks to be in good shape. Good luck, and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Your best bet would be to take it out for a sea trial. My previous boat was a 21ft Striper. It only had a 130hp on it. When I first looked at it I thought it was underpowered, but when I got it out on the water I found it moved well. Of course any boat could use more power, but if it feels powerful enough for you thats what matters.

Seafarers in that timeframe came with 200's as the standard power. Put the right prop on it and you'll be fine. I'd grab that one before someone else does..

Just got home from the sea trial. We bought it! Can't get it until next weekend though. It hopped on plane in about 3 seconds- very impressive. It only had 1/2 tank of gas though and 2 adults/2kids. Cruised at 3800rpm and 27mph. Maybe the 30mph was just with him and light fuel load. I'm supper happy with it though. Pics to follow!
