Looking a 2011 GW 225 Freedom and it has a Yamaha F200 on it. Usually I see a F250 on the Freedom 225. Will the F200 make the boat underpowered and perform as well?

Is the motor a 2011? Yamaha came out with a new 4.2L offshore motor last year and there was not a 200 HP in the lineup. There were the new 225, 250, and V6 300. If it is the old F200 I would say that you will be a bit disappointed how it performs on that hull. Get the 250 is possible or the 300. Mine has the F250 and it is a great match. You will need the extra HP when it gets rough.

But isn't the Yam F250 itself not a 'true' 250hp motor without running 89 octane fuel?

Aren't the newer Yamaha V6"s smaller and lighter than previous models? If not, I would think the 300 would be much too heavy for the 225. I've been on a friend's GW 20 center console, that is 3 or 4 years old with a 250 Yamaha and it's entirely too heavy and the boat's performance is awkward to say the least. Unless giving it excessive throttle, it rides too bow high for too long till reaching planing speed. When walking to the stern while anchored or moored, the scuppers allow water into the cockpit. The engine seems too heavy for the boat. The boat would perform much better with lighter Etec, but unfortunately, Grady doesn't provide that option.

Yes, it is a 2011 f200. So, the motor will not perform well with that hull? I wonder if it would e hard for the to swap it for a f250 and I pay the difference?

Yamaha recently introduced a new F200 and F225 that utilizes the 3.3. liter F250 power head, variable camshaft timing, and mechanical controls. I would guess it is a much stronger motor than the old F200's. I'm not suggesting it's enough motor for the boat, a sea trial should be done. It's just that you might want to investigate it a little before rejecting it.

Thanks. I don't think this is the new one though. They have had this boat since Jan 2011 and I don't think the new motor was released then - right?

Capt Ed, no such thing as a new model F200, only the 225, 250 and 300 on the "new" motor, these are all electronic contol.

Only left over is F250 which is mechanical control.

Since no date of manufacturer on Yams for years now, any motor left over is new as in 2001 if fresh out of factory, same as left up to 5 yrs ago.

New as in new, warranty applied once commissioned.

Yamaha does not make a 4 stroke 175 or 200 HP motor for saltwater.

Whatever 200 4 stroke out there for sale as new is leftover.

So, bottom line is the f200 would not be a good engine for this boat? At least that is what I'm guessing, see most come with f250.

Directly from Yamaha web site:

Yamaha’s proven family of 3.3-liter V6 outboards continues to
evolve to meet the needs of boaters who prefer a large, powerful
outboard that uses a mechanical control box. Now, the F200
and F225 “mechanical” models both use the same powerhead
that drives the legendary 3.3-liter V6 F250.
The change means the 3.3-liter F200 and F225 now both have
Variable Camshaft Timing, which increases low and mid range
punch. These outboards provide even more fl exibility for
re-powers or applications where drive-by-wire technology
is not desired.

I did confirm that this new 2011 GW 225 does come with a Yamaha F200 engine. Just don't know if it would be too underpowered for this boat?
