209 Escape, best size motor,150hp,200hp,225hp?

I am looking to buy a used 209 with t-top. What is the best sized yamaha for the boat. I see many with 150 but I think it is to small, what realistic cruise and top end can I expect from a 150hp 4 stroke? Is the 200 or 225 to much engine?

jdr2: It really depends on what you want to do with it and whether you're looking at 2 stroke or 4.

I had a 208 for ten years with a Yami 150 HPDI. With just a couple of people and light gear, the boat hit 30 mph at 4,000 rpm. That was perfect for me. Top end was about 39 mph - I could never quite hit 40. The weight balance was great. Five years into ownership I added trim tabs and they made a good ride better.

The only time I wished for more power was when I had 4 scuba divers and all their gear. But that wasn't often. If I were to run with that kind of weight often, then I probably would have wished for a 200.

A friend also has a 208 with an F150. It is a tad slower to get up on plane, but to me, the quiet and lack of vibration are worth it.

If you do opt for an F200 or F225, I think you'll be very happy with the power and the boat can certainly handle the weight. I will say though, that with those engines, I would be sure to have trim tabs so you can keep the nose down when heading into a chop.

I suggest you search 'Escape 209 repower' here.

I got alot of help here a few years ago with my 1993 209.

Ended up going 200HPDI. Great match.

What year 209 are you looking at?

150 will pass in a calm lake. Rough seas and wind, you need at least 200. I've been driving a 208 in the Chesapeake for several years, 150 is way too light. Just MHO
 
I have a 208 with Yamaha 150 4 storke, it's quiet, no vibs in the hull and responds well to throtlle inputs but, it is slow to get up on plane, even with just myself, my son(i'm 185lbs and he's 100lbs soaking wet) and gear and food. Once on plane she runs best at around 42-4400 rpm and 32/33mph in calm seas/winds.
I bought her off the showroom floor, already set up, so I didn't want to thru the money at repowering, but I wish I had a 200 or 225.
Of course, like already stated alot depends on where your going to do your boating. I fish and boat in the Ches. Bay/Outer Banks area.
Also, I learned this the hard way, ask if the fuel/water separate on the engine(not in the fuel line) has been changed. Orginally installed separaters are too sensitive and will give you false warning. If hasn't been changed recommend you get that done.
One last thought, the 209 is about 500lbs lighter that the 208, just some food for thought! Good Luck!

My 98' 209 w/ t-top came with a 225 FI 2 stroke and made for a very fast boat. Two yrs ago I replaced with a f150 and am very happy, and also carry a 8hp kicker on back. A heavier 4s, kicker, batteries and maybe a bait tank will start to add up.........tom
