Is the 33' underpowered with these engines. I was told Yamaha tried to pull a fast one by rating the HP of the engines at the head as opposed to the prop. i.e a reduction of HP by 25.

I have a 2003 33 with 225's. Do I think it is underpowered? No. Do I wish that I had more speed some times? Yes. I think It handles well with the 225's. It isn't a rocket ship but it out performs most same size boats with diesels. My top speed Loaded is in the Mid 30's and cruise 28 to 30 mph. I have been on the 33 with 250's and there isn't much difference except the 250's burn a little more fuel. Yes the Yamahas are rated at the head . I hear at the prop the 225 is about 209hp.

I had a225s on mine and repowered with the 250s. The 250s might be a hair faster and burn a bit more fuel. If the 225s are in good shape, I think you will love them on that boat.

Best I recall, 4600 rpms gave you 26 mph at about 1.0 - 1.2 mpg give or take. What the 225s had that the 250s do not, was a sweet spot that gave you 20 mph and 16 gph. Granted that's not flying, but on a long waterway trip it's fast enough and pretty economical.
