228 cockpit scuppers

The 228 Seafarer scuppers are mostly below the water line at the best of times but especially with a kicker motor and full fuel tanks. Add a couple heavy guys playing fish and working downrigger in stern 'corner" the cockpit and you get backflow up through the scuppers. Before you know it there can be a big "puddle" of water in the corner where heavy guys are situated.

I am trying to figure out best way to stop this - one, two, three or all of the following:

1) Haul boat and replace each complete thru hull/scuppers with new ones, either the rubber one way flapper style that Grady installs or the ping pong ball type? Will the ping pong ball type drain as well as the flapper type if partially or fully below water line ?

2) Repace only the rubber flapper and not the whole scupper thru hull ? ( The present rubber flappers in the scuppers are stiff and don't close/seal water out properly) Can I just replace these rubber flappers on the 228 without removing the whole scupper ?

3) Install a seacock shut off on the thru-hull to each of the scuppers and only open them on a trip when I need to use washdown or need to drain deck ?
I have read that every thru hull below or at static water line should have a seacock shut off however because scuppers don't normally sit below water line they don't normally need to be seacock protected. The problem with having a scupper seacock is that you would absolutely have to remember to keep them open for rain drainage when the boat is stored/moored.

4) Have some cockpit deck drain plugs on hand to block the back flow through the scuppers and flooding onto cockpit deck or can I expect new scupper one way rubber flappers to completely seal off the backflow onto deck ?

I had same problem with my 228. Replaced flappers on outside and no more trouble. My scuppers are ridin deeper now cause i upfitted from two to four stroke, but still no water on deck. Well worth the $15 and twenty minutes. If only all the other repairs were this easy.
 
Hi- I have a similar problem on mt '03 228. Drains fine, but if there is a lot of weight in corner, water comes in. I believe it's the original rubber /plastic in the scupper. Not a big deal so I haven't focused on it, but it sounds like replacing them could be an easy fix. I have no experience replacing these. Is it easy to do, or a project. Any tips / suggestions is greatly appreciated.
 
A pm I got yesterday about this old thread has brought me back here 3 years later lol.

Easy to replace rubber flappers except that for me, mooring 24/7, it meant waiting to do several other things since the boat being hauled out of the water is rather pricey.
Just take the one screw out on top of the rubber flapper ( there will be a plastic piece on the screw that acts to clamp against top edge of flapper) Then replace with new rubber flapper, putting it on exactly the way old one came off. Grady apparently uses Perko flappers and sent me some back in 2013 - I have used both those and a set I got from T-H Marine. Forgot the diameter size but the T-H Marine ones came in a set with 3 sizes and I used the smallest in the pkg. A call to Grady customer service will answer what size diameter you need for your Grady.
In 2003 Grady raised their 228 scuppers 1"- 1 1/2" to accommodate the heavier 4 strokes so with that year and newer the stern weight could be greater before the scuppers would be pushed below water line. Grady suggested I raise my scuppers on my 2000 228G ( fill in old holes and re drill thru hull in higher position ) :wow .... that would certainly be a bit more of a project than taking 20 min to replace scupper flappers
