what is the normal top end speed for a 228g hard top grady with a 225 yamaha 4 stroke ? my boat on flat water now goes 35mph at 5000 rpm wot. is this normal for this rig with a 4 stroke?

A lot of factors at work for individual speed results.
1. How much extra weight is aboard? Lots of guests, full fuel, full ice or livewells, lots of "crap" will make the boat heavier and slower.
2. Is the bottom clean? Barnicales and slime will slow you down.
3. Enclosure up? The wind resistance increases and will slow you down.
4. Correct prop- have to see what your owners manual says top end RPM range should be.
All that being said- my 20 with a 225 will run just shy of 50 mph with a heavy fuel load, so a 15 mph differance with only 2 feet boat difference seems like you should be running faster.

boat is trailered and has a clean bottom. had 20 gal. of gas with 3 average sized people. hard top open. rpm band of outboard from yamaha book says from 5k to 6k.

Something's off....your F225 should turn up to 6000 RPM at WOTand top end should be 41-42. Even trimmed all the way you should be able to get 5500-5600 rpm.
What prop are you using? What kind of shape is it in? Have you pulled both the bilge plug and bracket plug to make sure neither is full of water?

Sounds slow to me, too. My 228 w/hardtop used to easily hit 40 mph in calm water (and honestly, the fuel level and people on board didn't change the top-end very much). That was at 5500+ rpm though, with a 225 OX66.
Mine gets 40-41 loaded fairly light - say half-fuel, 2-3 people, canvas off. Load it to the gills for fishing - full fuel, 200 lbs ice, 3 big guys fishing, tackle, etc, etc - maybe 38ish (but sea conditions and fuel economy dictate running around 25 - 30 mph for me).
Sounds like you are over-propped. We get 5700-5900 loaded, 6000 to 6100 light. Trimming the engine out does increase rpm, but in your case I'm betting you need a different prop.
Bottom-line the 228 with a hard top and F-225 is a 40 mph boat; with a F250 maybe 43-44.

the prop has a 19t stamped on it. by going down to a 17 pitch how much rpm will I gain? checked the bilge and off shore bracket also both were dry. also would it be a mistake changing out the stainless steel prop for a aluminum one? what brand stainless steel prop or aluminum prop would you recommend?
Yes, going to an aluminum prop would be a big mistake - you lose top-end performance because the aluminum prop tends to not maintain its shape compared to SS. You'll have to fork out the bucks for SS. I just checked our prop for you - it is a Yamaha Saltwater Series II 15 1/4 X 17. Your 19 pitch is too much.
Parthery (here in Great Grady) has had good results changing from Yamaha SWSII props to Mercury Mirage SS props. He may want to chime in again and offer some more insight on the subject as he has much more experience with different props than me.
FWIW I'm happy with what I have but if I ever needed to but another prop (hope not!), I'd check around and maybe test drive a couple first and see if there is a difference between Yamaha and Merc.

Jiminga is correct in what he says. I have an f-250 with a 17 pitch and turn 6000 rpms with a wot of 43 mph(that's on a Yamaha SWS prop). I bought a new Mercury Mirage Plus on ebay for $175 as a spare and will probably try it out in the next 2 weeks. I would try ebay and try for a merc prop as they seems to be in good supply and therefore much cheaper than the yamahas but, you must buy a flo torque hub to adapt it to your yamaha (approx $45). You will see a lot of props on ebay as many people buy them, try them and then sell them out if they dont get the performance they were looking for, so that can work for you. If you get the prop you like you can most certainly sell your yamaha prop on there as well to defray the cost. Hope this helps.

It's a prop that loves to run high.....on the 226 if I went WOT with the trim down, I would only get 5000 rpm or so...but trim it out and it's like an overdrive gear. Picks up the 500 rpm and my top end jumped from 39 to 41.5-42.
You will need a hub kit if you run a Merc prop on a Yamaha. It runs about $35 or so.

1990 228/ HONDA F225. I get 40mph wot. I cant imagine going any faster would be safe for that hull design.

My old Overnighter 204C with a 2smoke DT225 will easily do 46 mph with 2/3 fuel and 4 on board.
A little less fuel and 2 on board I’ve hit 48.
I’m running a 20p prop. I wouldn’t think a 22’ seafarer would run less with a 225, at least a 19p.

2 crew. Hardtop with enclosure up. 92 gal tank full. Bottom paint. Yamaha SWS II 17x15 1/2 prop . 2006 F250. 43mph 6000rpm.

2020 w/F250 - I've hit 40 @ around 4600rpm with 2 people on board, 2/3rd full tank and I had more engine left, just no balls, 40 was flying on the Pacific. My numbers matches Grady's performance chart which tops out at 48mph @ 5800rpm. I doubt I'll ever get the boat going that fast, 40 seems like enough, more than enough.
This guy is supposedly the end all to be all on props, I repropped to a 4 blade based on what he told me:
