I am looking to install a windlass on my 257. I will probably have it installed by the dealer, but just as a point of reference how much should the job cost. Can it be done by myself or should i just let the dealer do it.

Also, just found the site. Looks like theres a lot of info on here. I can't wait to read through it all.

Welcome aboard. Installation is very easy, no special skills and no special tools either. Make sure you position the winlass on top of the deepest part of the well. I've done it a few times, just make sure you get the installation kit as far as the wires and switch. Personally, i prefer free fall horizontal style(motor above the deck), but power down is also good.

Dealers usually charge from 1500-2500 depends on the model.

PS. For your boat a Lewmar 700 or a 30 foot class would be ideal.
