My thru hull transducer quit last year and I need a replacement, not too sure i'm comfortable removing the old one and the fairing block it's in. I'm old and fat so even reaching down in there could be a problem. What do you all suggest? Please skip the lose weight comments, as ide still be old.
Bite the bullet and go for it, Any helpful tips for removal? or install a transom mount transducer. If I were to go transom mount, where do I put it with the step hull of the 272, at bottom of true hull or back at step up? And also if the old fairing block isn't removed would it cause turbulence that would disrupt readings at speed?

Which bullet are you talking about? A DIY job or having it changed by a technician. What transducer do you currently have and what model MFD? Are you sure the transducer id shot and not that MFD or cable?
The job in theory is straightforward but there are many areas that can end up being a pain. Just pulling the new cable is one of those.
Depending on your hull, you may not need a fairing block since many transducers are available in different preset angles. So a decision has to be made on whether to use a straint one with the fairing block or removing the block and install a n angled transducer

I suggest you see what the shops want to recommend a solution and do the job:)
 
Seasick, certainly not bad advice. The bullet was DIY I have matching MFDs and did try swapping with no change.
Not near the boat, but I kinda remember the thru hull and fairing block being pretty centered on the bottom.
I think Grady has a flat surface molded in the interior floor for mounting.
