I'm about to buy a 2003 282; the only thing it does not have that I want to install is a stereo system. Can anyone provide some input as to where to install the stereo and (4) speakers. I see most have installed the stereo in the cabin under the shelf and (2) speakers up in the forward cabin to either side of the anchor locker with a remote control at the helm. Where could (2) others be installed to get good sound in the cockpit?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

The setup on my 272 is just as you describe above with the 2 additional speakers being under the gunnels in the cockpit. They are just about even with the aft facing seats. The sound is good and the speakers are well protected.

Don't know the exact dimensions, but they are box speakers. They were installed along with all the electronics when I bought the boat new and I never looked up inside to see what they were. 6 x 9 sounds a bit large to fit up under the gunnel though and, just to clarify, they are downward facing and not cut through the siding.

My Sailfish has four 6.5 inch speakers in plastic boxes. Two are mounted in the cockpit about even with the seat pedestals and two are in the cabin. One is attached to the front of the head wall and the second is mounted on the other side of the microwave. The CD player is in the "glove box" along with a VHF radio.

My boat is a little different. I have a clarion stereo in the electronics box with 2 speakers(6") facing down, and mounted in the bottom of the box. In addition I have 2 box speakers mounted on the hard top between the spreader lights. They have decent protection from the hardtop. This will be season 6 with them, so they have held up. It was just easier mounting them up there then running the speaker wires down under the gunnels. I find the sound is good. I can see and use the functions on the head unit easily from the helm. Most of the time we are listening to satellite radio which I control from my simrad or an ipod which is mounted at them helm for easy access.
