'95 268 Islander Transom

The transom of my '95 268 has seen better days.
Removed the twin engines, removed the Bang cap and fiberglass cap.
Next I find a piece of aluminum the width of the engine well, ~60 inches in length, mounted on the top surface of the transom (~2") then bends down on the inside of the transom.
Surprisingly the wood isn't in horrible shape, better than I expected. The problem is on the starboard side, the transom "separated" at the end of the plastic cap//bang cap.
I removed the piece of aluminum previously described.
Question: how thick is the transom from the outer skin to the inner side of the transom?
See attached pics, you can see the space between the wood and the engine well, don't think these 2 surfaces are connected as the engine well is part of the top of the boat.

It looks really bad. But what I'm lookin for are stress cracks on the exterior of the transom. When they fail the transom rotates out with vertical stress cracks.

Boat doesn't look well maintained. You are going to need more duct tape.

Are you familiar with the construction of the transom? Fiberglass skin/wood/aluminum/etc......
I'm trying to extend the life of my boat a few years.
If you, or someone else can provide info re: the construction of the transom it would be appreciated.
Want to make it strong, I know it's not going to look perfect.
 
Has a marine plywood core and stringers. Greenwood not used until later in GW boats. That is a big job for sure.
 
Transom sandwich for 268 from GW. Transom separates from stringers that hold it vertical. You need to replace parts of them too.

Now..........do you have a print that shows a view looking at the transom? Including the aluminum angle that connects the stringers to the transom through the lifting rings?
Looks to me like the (2) pcs of 3/4" plywood under the bang cap are separate pcs ~60" wide, then the "transom" continues on each side,
