'95 268 Islander

I have a '95 268 Islander w/ twin '95 Johnson 175's. They weigh ~375# ea, boat is rated for 400HP Max.
Considering a pair us '99 Yamaha ox66 225's. They weigh ~500# ea.......that's an additional 250lbs hanging off the back, no too worried about the additional 50HP.....never ride WOT.
The '95 200 Johnsons were ~450# ea.........only 50# lighter than the Yamahas ea.

Any thought/opinions?

I wouldn't do it. 225 ox66's have some serious grunt, even by today's standards for a 225. That engine is nearly identical to the ox66 250. Sure, peak power is higher on the 250, but I would guess the low and mid range of the 225 are nearly the same as the 250. That is a lot of additional thrust on a 36 year old transom.
As for the weight, find 250-300 lbs of people to sit in the back to see how it looks at rest, and then add another 300 lbs. That is how it will really look and handle with the 225's and some other passengers. Some of the short hull Grady's don't handle well with a lot of weight in the back IMO. Not sure if the Islander of that vintage is one of them.

With the stepped transom, the scuppers sat at or below the water line with the weight of the 150s; increasing the wear and deterioration of the deck drain hoses. I don't know if the '95 has the stepped transom, but it 225s sounds like an awful lot for an Islander. You also may have insurance issues if you go beyond the 400 HP spec.

I wouldn't do it. I have a 99 islander. The boat is narrow and very weight sensitive. The F150's that i have at 487lb each and are the absolute max I would put on the boat. I have even removed the aux/aft fuel tank and of course the oil tanks to lighten up the stern. My scuppers are right at the water line with a half full main tank of 128 gallons.

I agree with EFX. My 1997 268 Islander is max'ed out with my Yamaha F150's.

Agree with family affair and efx. I have a 95 islander and it is too narrow.

I agree with all the other comments above; don't go above the 400hp rating GW is giving for that model. I just bought a '95 Islander last year and am in process of moving the scuppers up due to the additional weight of dropping two new Yamaha 200 four strokes on (487lbs each).

I checked w/ the insurance and they said no problem

I have no issues with suppers and you will love the torque. I run at 3800rpm and it gives me 40mph. Tops out at 52 but dont need to go that fast but its nice to know I can.

I have no issues with suppers and you will love the torque. I run at 3800rpm and it gives me 40mph. Tops out at 52 but dont need to go that fast but its nice to know I can.
Does the 98 use the aluminum brace in the transom that is connected to the stringers? If the 95 doesn't, you could be comparing apples to oranges with regards to transom strength. Buoyancy will of course be the same.
What displacement are the etec 200 HO?

No aluminium brace and I think the motors are 3.4L

If the 95 and 98 transoms are indeed the same, and the 95 transom is in great shape, then it is doable. The 200 etec ho is a 3.3 and likely making more midrange power than an ox66 3.1.

Another consideration is if you have the aux fuel tank.
That adds considerable weight and with the heavier motors might be an issue

Were the scuppers so low you got water on the deck?

No, the deck wouldn't necessarily have water coming out of the drains, but the actual scuppers would have been submerged. While that isn't a huge issue, should there be a problem with a scupper or hose/clamp you could have a sunk boat...
