Hi,
I read through quite a few posts regarding through hulls and some regarding scuppers. After several yrs of trailering following several yrs of mooring I got will be placing the boat back in a slip this year. I had some water in the bilge on occasion and knew a lot was from rain but there was some salt. I got the ambition up and inspected the through hulls which were all the old plastic composite and were chalky and brittle. I pulled out 6 of them and 1 literally broke off when I touched the hose. I suspecdt that was the one causing some salt water intrusion. There are 2 that are tough to get at but I got them which were under the helm areas on each side. Both hard to reach and have straight thread 90 degree fittings with hose attachements on them. I will replace these with plastic ones because I believe it will make them easier to change in the future and maintain with the option to snap them off or cut the flange from outside to renew them. Easier to install than to remove. I will probably use ss ones for the rest because they were fairly easy to access. Now the scuppers. This boat has the scuppers below the water line as I see is common with others who have this model. The original scuppers still in are plastic loooks like 1 1/2" with faily short exhaust grade hose going to deck drain fitting. I will remove these and inspect the hoses and hopefully not break the deck drain. I need some advice on the proper replacement scupper. I see attwood makes a SS model for about 110.00 and also perko and attwood make the plastic models. I really don't mind inspecting these every year with possibly replacing them every 3 or 4 years as necessary. The 2 plastic models appear to have readily availalbe gasket/valve kits.
The queswtion and advice needed is this:
Is there a real advatage to using the expensive SS scupper due to them being located below the water line, or will a properly maintained and replaced plastic scupper suffice? Note that the deck fitting is above the water level and the deck drains fine. I think the valsve are in fack not so good anymore due to water rises up when a lot of weight is in the rear corner. I also have a 9.9 4 stroke mounted in the starboard side that I am removing cause I never use it and it justs adds weight.
Also noted that all the through hulls for deck and fish box drains are 1" and the bilge are 1 1/8" and the bilge has a slightly smaller flange to it for some reason.
I appreciate any info provided, and hope this reminds others to check these fittings as they really do deteriorate.
