Tournament 192
Hey y’all,

this post is more to document my journey for my repower for any others with a Tournament 192 that are considering a repower since I’ve experienced a lot of things and learned a whole bunch over the past few months.

a few months back I picked up a very nice boat from a guy in Wilmington that fit the Bill for what my family was looking for. It was equipped with a 2003 Suzuki DF140, which ran great for the end of the season. It started running rough towards the end and took it to my man Marty at Action Marine near Ocean Isle beach to have a look and lo and behold water in the oil. Dagummit.
The hull is simply in amazing shape although she did have some listing at rest to look into. So we made the decision to move forward with the repower if we could fix the list and also make sure the transom was in good order. List was starboard side, and some of this detail is captured in another thread a few days ago - thank you for the replies. In the end I think it was a matter of the boat being balanced with a water wash down tank that used to exist on the port side.

I took her over to Scott McKee from the McKee boat family who runs an amazing glass and gel coat repair shop. Scot was nothing short of an amazing partner in working with me to fix the list and evaluate the decision to repower. We moved the batteries over to port side which fixed the list and I had several dings and chips repaired to where you can’t even tell.

transom checked out good, he drilled a test hole, plus flushed out the gas tank area and checked all the weep holes. On mine the tank was sealed in place with a non-removable fuel panel. I heard from Grady that it’s basically a lifetime poly tank.

next was the decision on what to repower with. The Suzuki DF140 ran her fine but was a wee bit sluggish to get up and go. However that model ran 420lbs which is a good weight since the 150-200 weighting was likely by 2 stroke standards which probably came in around the same weight based on my research.

so I was between a fresh 140 or moving to a 150. I really liked what I saw in the Merc 150 in both its weight (465 for25” shaft), displacement of 3.0L, and geared towards DIY mechanics. I met Scott at the ramp and we did a float test with the existing 140 and then with a 45lb sandbag on top to simulate 465lbs. The scuppers dipped down about .5” but I’m ok with it since rain will still easily drain from the deck. So after some hemmin and hawinwe decided to pursue the Merc 150 and found a new one in Wilmington in stock (considering myself lucky given all the supply chain issues these days). So now picking out gauges and controls for her. Can’t wait to get after the fish with the fam soon enough!

attaching some pics of my journey, and will add here and there. So many posts out there about bits and pieces of what I went through so figured consolidating will help some other new classic 192 owner that might be going through similar decision process.

RIP DF140 and your corroded soul

we will see where she sits after the Merc is mounted. I may consider moving batteries to the port side helm to shift the weight from aft. Will keep you posted.

Some documentation from Grady for reference on listing... Josh was VERY helpful in helping answer my many questions

I've been doing some research on what changed from the Tournament 192 vs. the Freedom 192. I noticed that the weight went from 2,075 (mine is a 1996 Tournament 192) to 2,475 in 2012 Freedom 192. That's a 400lb increase for what is essentially the same hull. I'm looking into this because I want to raise my stern once I repower with a heavier 4 stroke. If Grady is selling Freedom 192's with Yam 150's new with 400 extra pounds on the dry hull, then does that mean I could theoretically add up to 400 pounds to my hull and still get the same performance as a new Freedom 192? I completely realize that balancing a boat is a science, and there is no way I would just plop 400 pounds in the front of the boat - I don't think I will need anything close to that. But I can probably strategically place weight in the front half of the boat and move the batteries from stern to the helm.

First thing I've noticed that Grady did with the Freedom release is move the gas tank forward. The older tournaments have the fuel tank that start behind the captains chairs, but the Freedom have them closer to the helm.... Say it was moved by at least a third of the length of the fuel tank, that means at least 100 pounds (6.2lbs/gallon * 1/3 of 60 gallon tank) was shifted to the captain chair area - I 'm sure that made a big difference, but wouldn't have added any weight... Anyone else know what was added for weight? Thicker glassing? 400lbs is a lot of glass... Perhaps weight built in elsewhere?

My Tournament 192 with fuel tank behind captain chairs:

Newer Grady Freedom 192 (this is a 2015), with hull moved forward by at least 2 feet...

I had a 1998 192 which came with a Johnson Ocean Pro 150. I bought it used. I repowered in 2004 with a Yamaha 150 four stroke. I had zero issues and the boat just hummed with that motor. I think you're over thinking it some.

Smoky mountain I think you’re right that I am overthinking it - we will see here in the next few weeks!

Was able to get into the bilge - infinitely easier with the motor removed!!! Needed a good scrubbing - those pie holes don’t make it very easy. Some before and after pics...

nice write up. you systematically addressed this situation and sounds like you made some good decisions based on solid data. Good luck with her.

It drives me crazy that hoses are routed right down the middle of the bilge. Plumb them toward the front of the bilge to the bulkhead so everything is clear and organized. Then the bilge can be kept clean and you can see what’s going on down there! Nice write up. Enjoy the mercury 150. It’s a good engine. Keep it flushed well after each use.

It’s a good question - I think it might be the outflow from a live well that was once installed. I have a thru-hull pickup scoop under the port side hull that feeds the aeration pump you see in the bilge, although its no longer connected to anything. It’s completely sealed now. That’s the only thing I can think it is/was.

New Merc 150 is now mounted! Trying to figure out what size prop - 14.25" x 17 aluminum prop was only running 5200rpm (only prop the shop had to try). So I will be testing out my old Suzuki 14" x 18P (which is also a 15-spline prop, but will probably need different washers) to see how that does. I have a feeling the 18P might be too much and I may end up with a 14" x 17p or 16p. Any advice for finding the right prop after a repower where you don't know where to start? Anyone use one of the online prop rental programs?

We repowered our ‘98 with a 2015 Evinrude ETec 150hp replacing the previous ‘98 Evinrude Ficht 150hp. Ended up with the same prop but did test one step up just in case. Basically landed on the lowest pitch that hit full RPMs at low load. 4F699DEA-F421-480B-BF92-6022600D1A8F.jpeg

Thanks SeanAh - yes I think I need to drop down one more inch in pitch and I’ll be there. Btw yours looks great - the flooring makes it look so warm and inviting :)

Yeah those carpets were nice. Basically bathroom carpets from Kohls that we added snaps to. We sold last year and just purchased a 2015 Freedom 225. 428B8303-F603-4B82-8F15-9FB407AE725D.jpeg428B8303-F603-4B82-8F15-9FB407AE725D.jpeg

Just a quick update - up to about 15 hours on the new Merc 150. Really loving this motor and can't believe what a difference a new helm, steering system, hoses makes - wow!

I've been running an aluminum black max prop 15.5 x 15p and am getting about 5700rpm w/ light load at WOT at just over 40mph. Going to run it for the season but think when I jump to a SS, will get the Enertia 14.75x16p.

On my 192 it’s the water fill for the 10 gallon tank for your transom shower

Hi , 1995 192 i noticed trim tabs how do they work for you ? My boat is all original 150 saltwater Yamaha runs strong and am trying a 15.25 dia. 15 pitch aluminum i got used for $50 it seems ok and ready to go SS. Also i have 2 batteries on starboard side and water tank and oil tank on port side it seems balance. Happy boating from New England
