Hello-new to this forum. Looking at GW purchase-under consideration is a Marlin 30. Has twin 225 Yamahas 4s. Seller says adequate, some say underpowered. Yet GW put 225s on as a package for many years. I don't care about high top end. Just want to cruise 25 or so with gear, ice, 4 people. Are the 225s adequate for my needs? Any one with direct experience?

thanks

I have F250s on mine and it is more than enough for my use. I don't think 50HP more matters much.

I have a 2005 with 225s. It’s fine, not a speed demon but doesn’t feel sluggish to get on plane. Real world numbers from pics I took on my boat with 4 on board and at least 3/4 full in both tanks:
4500 rpm 27 mph 20.8 gph
4600 rpm 29 mph 23.4 gph
4800 rpm 31 mph 24.8 gph
5000 rpm 33 mph 28.5 gph
6000 rpm 40 mph 39.1 gph

thanks for both of your replies. helpful.
what is an ok rpm to run these engines at for long offshore cruise? 4500? So if I have 4 guys, ice, 15-20 albacore tuna, gear, and say, 3/4 fuel in both tanks it would plane ok and cruise at say 25mph in real world water conditions? naturally, one picks the weather pretty carefully in boats this size before going out....

I’d say 4500 or so, for fuel burn if nothing else. I don’t load the boat with ice or tuna though. I will say planing won’t be a problem. When I was looking I wanted a bowthruster, generator and AC and 250s. Boat I found had everything but had 225s on it. I sea trialed and found it to be fine so I bought it. Don’t forget they rigged 225s on he 330 for a while as well.

thanks very much for your reply and the info----how have the 225s been for you? do you happen to know what pitch props you have?? Let's see, thruster, gen, ac....that's probably weight of some ice and tuna....

yep, mid 40s and you are fine. Many of the 30s were sold with F225s. Identical motor to the early F250 except for tuning. More than enough power for average use.

Don’t know my prop pitch offhand. I’ve got 900 hours on the motors and they run well. I trust them enough I had both exhaust midsections replaced this spring, so I hope to get a few more years out of them. That’s a whole other thing to read up on though and not unique to the F225.

I ran a 2004 Marlin for years with 225s. In good conditions I could make 27-28 kts at 4700 RPM. Aside from the exhaust issues, they are great motors.
