I am not sure what you mean by best type. The actual windlass and either pulpit or roller selection depends on the type of anchor you want to run and how you want to use it. For example, you may want a free fall type of windlass. Those work best with an articulated roller ( the front roller is hinged).
Depending on the pulpit or roller decision, you need to see where the windlass could be mounted. Mounting over the existing anchor locker cover may require reinforcement. There are many brands of equipment and all occasionally have some issues so it is hard to say which is best. Lemar, Good, Maxwell(?) all have models that will accommodate your needs. Parts and installation add up fast. Adding a pulpit and rails to your boat cab run 3 to 5 thousand bucks and that doesn't include the windlass. A good articulated roller can run 200 bucks plus install, a windlass can run a 1500 and up and then there is install and wiring. Wiring can be not too bad or more extensive depending on any pre wires that may be in the boat and their size. A lot of these windlasses draw a lot of current and many of the early Grady pre wiring was sized for smaller draws. That means that new power cables have to be run.
Regardless of what route you go, make sure you spend the money for new rode and chain that is matched to the windlass. It is a critical piece of the puzzle that many cut corners on and end up plagued with jams.
