Anybody repowered their 33 with the F 300's

I have a 2003 33 just got the bad news that one engine has a hole in the head that is leaking water. It is a F225 with only 825 hours. After calling around I found that their aren't any GOOD used engines around. I did find a set of F350'sw with less then 200 hours but the guys at Grady customer service advised me not to go that way?? Just missed a pair of Used F300's that a guy replaced with F350's ( Previous 33 had 350's and bought new 33 with 300's repowered after a couple of months with the 350's). I think for resale the F300's are the way to go. Anybody upgraded to the 300's? How much of a difference did you notice?
 
a new pair of f300's will run you about $50k with rigging. i would just put a new powerhead on your f225 for $7k and call it a day.
 
a guy just posted a pair of 300hpdi's with 300hrs on them for $16k on thehulltruth.com
 
Is the 33 certified for 600 hp? If not, your insurance may be invalid....... or........ maybe get GW to give you a certified letter that it's good for 300s....

would a letter from GW really help with insurance? I know the 300s are the same weight my 33 has the 250s and i like the boat but if I was going to repower the 300s would make it a whole new boat

I guess people forgot the 300 HPDIs, the most powefull motor Yamaha had on market for many years until 300/350 V8 came out (recently), and Grady is a Yamaha only engine specifier. The big block V6 300 HPDI dates back before 330 introduction. The 300 HPDI was Yamaha's flagship motor for all those years.

300x2 = 600HP.
 
The 33 is rated for 700HP. You could probably change the power head for even cheaper than 7g. I'm not an outboard mechanic and I changed the powerhead on one of my motors. Just took everything off and reassembled it in reverse order on the new power head. Took a weekend and $2500, cheaper than a new motor. Take lots of pictures and label everything that comes off and its not hard. If your not on a budget get the bigger motors 8)

According to my 2003 G-W Brochure, the 330 was Max Rated for 500 HP. My 2004 brochure shows a Max of 600. If I'm not mistaken, insurance companies will balk at going over the max rated "for that year". Plus, there may be a good reason why the 2003s were max rated at 500......

Ya might want to do some research on the 2003 vs 300s before you splurge......
 
I talked to GW customer service today and they told me It was only rated for 500HP. Of course they can't say anything that would be a problem later. It you look at the performance report there is only 1.7 MPH difference at WOT between the 250 and 300. I really dont care about top speed anyway. Mater of fact the 225'S were fine. I out ran most of my friends boats in that size range that had diesels. I found a pair of 300's but the dealer knows that he can get a good price for them due the shortage of motors. Another dealer has a set of 3.3 F250 digital that I could get for thousands less than the 300's. Then the cheap way would just rebuild it.
 
Already have the 4-blade props. Trying to convince the wife to maybe sell as is and find a 36. So far she hasn't said much.
 
I've talked with my dealer concerning the 300's for my boat if I should run in to a similar situation and was told the boat would handle them. ( though my boat is 3 yrs newer). I have a question and I dont want to hijack your thread, what props are you running for the 4 blade and the pitch/cup on them?
 
The props are Mercury 4-Blade Revolution I had a set of 14 5/8" x 17"pitch that I had rep-pitched to 15". The biggest advantage is that there is no cavitation running in rough water. The top speed is about 2mph less but the cruise speed seems to have more response. Full Xtra Heavy load I get 5400rpm and about 36mph.

i have 4 blade Powertech props. i forget the size and pitch, but i can turn 6000rps and 39mph with my F225's. It feels like i have two 1000hp motors the way they pull me out of the hole.
 
Something to consider when evaluating your existings motors. There has been considerable discussion on THT about problems with the midsections of F225 corroding. Do a search over there and you will see some of the issues. I bet yours is within the year model range of the concern. Have your mechanic check the midsections of your engine before you rebuild. Understand if left alone it will cause engines to blow.

My mechanic checked out the mid sections and they look good. Still I'm not going to rebuild just too much money to do it right. I'm going to wait it out and let invintory build back up and repower later.

i can turn 6000rpm's with both tanks full and a full tank of water. yes my bottom is painted. it feels like she runs better with a full load.
