Have a 2003 Grady White 330 we want to put a Furuno 711C auto pilot in the boat has the stock Yamaha F225’s, Has sea star Rams (2), the specs say they have a volume of 8.34cc. My question is do you need to get a pump sized for the 8.34 or do you double it and get a pump that size?

Are you certain they are 8.34 cc vs. 8.34 cu in? Simple answer is to double the single ram volume. I have the same set up with F250s. I have a Type 1 autopilot pump which works fine for me. A bigger pump will move the motors faster, but my type 1 works just fine in pretty challenging conditions. If the 711C requires an RRU (rudder reference unit) I highly recommend you get a different version. The RRU does not work reliably on a twin outboard installation. I tried and tried to make mine work reliably and finally changed out the course computer for one that has a yaw rate gyro and negates the need for an RRU. The RRU had to be mounted on the my sea star cylinder (5358) and was not reliable at all. Furuno may be better.

I’m looking at the NavPilot 300. No RRU needed.
The recommended pump is the HRPUMP11-12 for rams up to 12 cubic inches.
I can get a PUMPHRP17-12 for rams between 14-25 cubic inches for USD$100 less than the 11-12.
What are the implications of using an oversized pump. Steering changes too fast.

Go to Furuno Forum USA. They helped me with my questions when I installed my NavPilot 300
