Batteries set up on 265

I was just wondering if anyone has added a third battery on their 265 and if so, where did you mount it. Thanks!
 
I have 2x 75 amp/hr deep cycle batts on the starboard side and one start bat on the port side in the rear compartments.
 
My 265 came with three - but I added a fourth

Two on the starboard side in parrellel to form "Bank 1" - this is used as my house system for fridge, ect when on the hook for overnighters - it also starts my starboard motor under standard conditions

One on the port side to form "Bank 2" - this is used to start my port motor under standard conditions

AND a fourth on the port side to form "Bank 3" - this is used as an isoluated back up under standard conditions

With switches I can use any of the batteries for starting -

My three bank charger keeps them always fully topped off-

I am using group 24 batteries -

My boat, has one batt. on the port side for the port engine, On the starboard side I have 2 one for the engine and house batt. I like the idea of a forth batt. just to use as a back up.
 
Thank you for your replies. It would make sense to add a 4th battery to keep the weight even and it would be great to have a back up. I wasn't sure if two batteries would fit in each compartment. I think I will leave this one to a professional.
 
I just upgraded my batteries from group 24's to group 27's. I called Grady to see if 27's would fit and they told me they were recommended for that boat....wonder why they had 24's installed then, and more importantly, a standard group 27 tray won't fit. If you modify the tray and cut a 2" by 1" corner of it out it fits and the group 27 batteries themselves fit perfectly. They run fwd to aft. With my battery charger on the ot side, 2 27's would be a very tight fit if they fit at all, 2 group 24's would though. If your adding an additional battery, I'd recommend going to group 27's, a lot more battery. Persoanlly, having a 4th battery, would give you a spare for just starting an engine, somewhat unnecessary if wired how the boat is currently wired. Unless you changed the wiring, you should never need that battery since there is no reason your port battery should ever go dead unless poorly maintained or just too old and abused to hold a charge.
 
I just re-installed my 3 group 24's. It's tight in there and I think I will put a group 27 on the port side when it's time to buy a new one for some added power but will probably stick with the 2 24's on the starboard side.

It is a tight fit but they do fit, the biggest problem is getting a 27 size battery tray in there, that will not fit. Some group 27 batteries might fit snuggly in a 24 tray, so measure before you remove it, but the batteries themselves do fit....barely.

Bill, if you have a big group 24 for the port side, going to a 27 won't benefit you since all that battery does is start the engine. Where going to a bigger battery will benefit you is on the other bank where your drawing electronics and starting, this is the bank that needs more juice since it is used a lot more and the batteries are put through their paces a lot more often and a bit harder. As long as you have the CCA to start the port engine and have a little more power in reserve you should be fine. Electro battery, the same manufacturer as my battery has a pretty big group 24, might be worth looking into. http://electrobattery.com/
I am impressed with their 27's so far, I have run my radio for 14 days now and the battery's just dropped a slight bit the last time down. I also have had my lights on a bit working at night as well as electronics on this week to check they all worked. I have not charged them yet, just hooked the shore power up yesterday to charge them.
The 24M-1060 is the one to use. My 27's are slightly bigger in stats to this model, price difference I believe was $15 between this group 24 and the group 27.
 
My thinking on the port battery was that I would use that side to run the Hydroglow off if we're overnighting. And I would have a little more reserve power there in case the starboard bank ran down to the point where it couldn't start my engine and I would need to jump it. So it was insurance where it would fit easily.

Where do you find Electro Batteries? Never heard of them or seen them anywhere...

My local dealer carries them, we used them on our previous boat, got 6 seasons out of them and they still work, new owner has them in the boat and is not replacing them this season, so going on 7, they passed a load test with flying colors. When it was time to replace my group 24's, I went with what has given me good life span. I'm not sure who might carry them up your way, might try calling them, 973-835-3334 I know that West Marine makes the same starting battery as Deka, but if my memory serves me correctly, it is not as much bang for the buck. The Deka/WM group 27 is a good battery with similar stats, 180RC and 1050MCA if I am correct, that would be my next choice for a group 27 if I did not go with the Electro. The WM battery was $20 more per battery, plus I get a good discount from my dealer so that and the fact that my local WM had to order the batteries and does not stock that size made my mind up easily when purchasing.
 
Thanks for the info. I've gotten 6 years out of a set of Exide Nautilus 27's. You start to get nervous about them though. I think a lot of it has to do with storage and maintenance. I always take mine off the boat bring them inside, check the fluid level and charge them 2 or 3 times over the winter. Other guys leave them in the boat ...
