bottom Paint

Electrolisis

What exactly are we looking at here? It looks like some kind of bracket with a bolt that I assume was badly damaged in the water.

yes that is the trim tab, look like there was a problem there before. I am going to open the area this Saturday and see whats up. Hopeing I got it in time. But is my bottom paint causing this, I see alot of boats have the black bottom paint and they do not have the pitting I have on my out drive.

I'm not sure but I think outdrives are suppose to get a differant anti-fouling paint then bottoms. Bottem paints generally have a copper compound of some type that does react with the aluminium in outdrives.

Not 100% sure though

I don't know what I'm looking at, but boats tabs and assoc hardware are stainless as I'm aware of, no problem with paint. You could have elctrolysis with stainless, have to monditor all underwater metals for such signs.

Keep copper paint off and away from anything made of alunimum not just the motor.

Boat is supposed to have sacrificall anodes, be sure they are installed.

Every boat that I've ever had bottom painted they made sure the bottom paint didn't come in contact with the metal of the outdrives or the trim tabs.

Yup boat came painted like that, the screw rotted out but opened it up and no water intrusion. Will look into changing over bottom paint next season during winter meanwhile will install extra zinc's.
Thanks guys.
