Brief sudden power loss

I have a 226 with a 2005 200 HPDI.

I have had the boat out a couple of times since launching in the beginning of the month. Today I was out and experienced a sudden brief power loss when at higher RPMs above 3000. During acceleration or regular running, power would just suddenly go out for a second or two (RPMs to 0). The first couple of times it happened I quickly pulled back on the throttle and brought it back to idol. I should point out the engine never shutoff where I had to restart it. After trying to get the problem to reproduce to understand it better I realized if I didn't pull back on the throttle when the RPMs cut out the power would come right back up. So it was like 3500 RPMs down to zero for a second or two and then suddenly back up to 3500 RPMs. Any thoughts on things to check out would be appreciated.
 
My first thoughts are, Loss of electric, perhaps a bad connection.
Clogged VST but that usually doesn't cause the motor to drop to 0 revs
Fuel starvation but that also doesn't usually the motor to completely die and then run.
Bad Throttle position sensor but that usually causes ups and downs in revs, not all to zero and back.
So best first uneducated guess, is electrical.
If the motor really went to 0 revs, restoring the power wouldn't start the engine, so if you see 0 Revs, it is because the signal died but the motor is still turning.
Let us know what you find.
 
Thanks. I am fairly mechanical but not a mechanic. Any typical electrical connections or spots that one might check?
 
Go for the simple things first, check your fuel water seperator on the engines, change your inline fuel filters then check all of your fuel lines for any sign of leakage. Check your battery connections.

After that if it still happens and assuming that the engine(s) are new enough to have the data storage processor bring it to a dealer and have them suck down the engine history and hopfully the answer will be there.

sounds like water in the fuel...had a similar run where I was doing 30 and all of a sudden loss of power, down to nothing, for about 1-2 seconds...almost threw us forward 5 feet...then she kicked right back up.....did this several times over the whole day.....went and got new gas....and it didn't happen again.
 
I've seen this happen as you describe. It's the second water separator on top of the motor. If it acumulates too much water it causes this to happen, easy fix once you find it.........Tom
 
can you describe where this water separator is and what it looks like? Thanks.
 
I had checked the gas tank with a water indicator and there was no water in the tank.

Next I replaced the VST filter and that did the trick - works great now.
