Canyon 366 hull concerns

We are looking at a '12 Canyon 366 and have a few concerns on hull issues. First the transom has been replaced/repaired, owner says from moisture damage. Repaired with Star bright instead of wood. How big of a concern or is this normal for gradys. Second, where else should someone be checking for moisture. I'm having a survey done but still checking other grady owners for their take on it. Thks

Hmm.....a 10 year old and very expensive boat that required a new transom? That would give me cause for concern. How could that hull get water intrusion like that in such a short time. My suspicious mind would be thinking that was caused by damage of some sort. Make sure you do your due diligence.

If the transom was repaired within 10 years, should have been under Grady warranty and done by Grady. I’d ask for documentation on the transom repair from Grady-White or if not from whoever did it. Agree with uncle Joe I’m guessing there may be have been some damage.
 
New development. Just got invoice where Grady paid for repairs. Must have been a production issue . Anyone else had this or simular issues? Thks
 
I thought Starbrite made chemicals. Maybe you meant Starboard but I wouldn't expect to see that as coring.
With respect to a survey and moisture test, the surveyor should take readings on many spots across the whole hull in addition to the transom. Tests should be done on areas around penetrations like through hulls etc.
Deck measurement s also should be done including locker lids.
If the boat is bottom painted, accurate measurements may not be possible without sanding off the paint which probably isn't going to happen.
Spots where deck mate to hull ( rub rail line) should be checked also. The surveyor may take readings from the inside out, a good thing, if the bilge areas allow.
If the surveyor has knowledge of issues specific to that model hull, of course he or she should check those ares on your hull Ask if there are known issues.
 
Starboard as a coring material? Never heard of it being used for that.
 
I've personally only heard of a few newer, 10-15 years old or less, Grady's needing the transom replaced as most of the time it seems to happen with GW's that are older than the 1997 model year. Which is when they made the switch from marine grade plywood to Greenwood XL and it's supposed to be much better and resisting moisture/rot. I'd be curious to hear more about what happened though, as that's rather embarrassing for a company like Grady White to have a boat that's only 10 years old need the transom replaced because of moisture or rot.
 
maybe it wasn't the transom but the plastic or metal trim covering the seam.... Thats my guess based on "Starbrite" and it only being 10 years old
