I have a 1966 80 HP Johnson with electric shift (on a wood boat - not my Grady), and the lower unit needs to be rebuilt. Water is getting into the oil quickly, and plenty of oil is leaking onto the cavitation plate and prop with each use. Does anyone know of someone they would recommend to work on a classic in New England or New York? The motor runs very well otherwise. Thanks.

Whoa ! these old motors have gearboxes that work fine with water as lube!

I have a 1968 9.9 Evinrude in storage for 35+ yrs, mint condition, another old timer motor.

Didn't think parts were still available.

Bob - You are right- the water seems to work fine in the lower unit! I bought the motor as part of a deal on an antique boat last summer, and there was oil leaking from the first time I used it. I was not sure where the oil was coming from but it ran like a top all last season. The motor is electric shift and the shift is as smooth as silk (unlike the Yammi on my Grady - Clunk) so it must like the water also. In any case, when I drained the lower unit at the end of the summer, the lube came out looking like white paint, so I am sure water is getting in. I don't want to push my luck so it is time to get it fixed. If anyone has a specific mechanic that they know is experienced on classic motors and that they can recommend, that would be great. I live in Connecticut. Thanks.

I was just kidding on the water, hope you didn't do any damage down there.
