Has anyone tried to coast guard document a 235 freedom. Numbers seem real close

It’s based on tonnage not weight. Basically volume of hull.

Depending on the state u live in, you do not need to register and do annual renewal stickers, no state title, boat name and port identify the boat (cleaner apperarance). I have never taken my boat to another country but since it is federally documented supposedly it facilitates border requirements.

Some states require registration regardless of Coast Guard documentation.

I had a Back Cove that was CG documented and South Carolina (Charleston County) still collected personal property tax on it without state registration.
Pay the man…

I just went through this for my 235, sort of. The bank I first dealt with wanted coast guard documentation. I knew nothing about it. Dealer called and said that it was crazy, especially for where we live (Michigan) and size of boat. We ended up not doing it, as not having MC numbers in Michigan would have likely had me getting pulled over constantly, likely. Went through a different bank and spoke with another broker who did not think it was big enough to be able to be documented. But he wasn't sure.
