I have a Garmin 178C GPS/FF combo unit and recently added an Icom 304 VHF with DSC. I got my MMSI number and programmed it into the VHF.

In order to connect the two units, I have connected according to the manuals and set the Garmin to NMEA out. The Icom does not show any connection. I'm in process of troubleshooting, I think because the boat is in my garage and the GPS can't find a satellite (running in simulator mode) it probably is not transmitting the data.

Anyone use the DSC feature to communicate with other vessels or just for emergency?

This is not a plug and play operation. I hired an installer and got taken for $75. I wanted to conect the Lowrance fish finder to the Garmin GPS and the GPS to the DSC on the VHF. He couldn't figure out either one. Never have been able to get the Lowrance to talk to the GPS but a fella on my dock that plays with electronics as a hobby called Garmin and wired mine for me. I can look this weekend and see what colors go where if that will help.

The older Lowrance GPS's had issues completely talking to DSC radios. I think it couldn't read NEMA 0183 in data. The problem may have been fixed with updates, check Lowrance.com for the updates on your unit.

I'm pretty confident in figuring this out, thx for the help. Anyone actually use the DSC features on the water? More than for the emergency functions?

I have had Lowrance LCX-16CI, LCX-19C and now LCX-112C interfaced to Icom M502 and Icom M602.

I currently have the LCX-112C providing GPS location information to my Sitex T721 radar, an Icom M602, a Simrad AP-16 and a Standard Horizon PS1000. The LCX-112C is also receiving DSC info from the Icom M602.

I have used DSC to establish communications with another station, and to exchange position information with another vessel. This is simply done by doing a "Position Request", the other station responds, and the Icom sends the position to the LCX. It is shown on the screen, and listed under "My Waypoints" by the MMSI number.

I have successfully set this up on several other vessels for friends.

I have not had to use any emergency DSC functions.

The DSC feature is great for getting in touch with other friends if you have their MMSI number. It saves the hassle of having to hail your friends on 9 or 16 and would keep 16 free for emergency traffic if more people would use it. If you go to the ICOM website there is a pretty informative tutorial on how to use all the DSC functions of your radio. Check it out!
