Embarrassing Admission/Question

I've been boating on the Chesapeake Bay for over 20 years and yesterday while maneuvering to anchor I had the starboard engine quit on me and would not stay running while in gear. The Yamaha display showed the engine blinking in red and was not responsive to moving the throttle from forward to neutral to reverse and would not stay running. I thought about reseting the whole system to see if the glitch cleared but decided against it while I had one good engine. I limped back home on the port engine and lifted the boat out of the water on my home dock lift and found that for the first time for me I'd wrapped a crab pot buoy and rope around the prop. It was pretty easy to cut it off the prop and drive housing and an initial check at the dock seemed to show that everything was working as it should - I could switch the outboard from forward to neutral to reverse all working as it should. That's my embarrassing admission, now the question:

Is there any chance any damage was done to the final drive when the buoy and rope seized up the prop? It seems OK but should I have it inspected or what has been your experience if you've had a similar misfortune?

This is the Yamaha 200 digital drive/Helm EX controlled outboards.
 
Most likely all is OK. It's important to make sure the line did not get wrapped around the prop shaft, in the space between the hub of the gear carrier housing ( like fishing line can do)

On another subject, there was a post a while ago about an audible alarm when a motor stalled. In your case it sounds like the stall caused a check engine alarm. Interesting.
 
Due to some travel I haven't been out on the water much but with the past 5 hours or so on it since the mishap it's been fine.
 
Pretty common occurrence! Usually not a problem. If you’re concerned about lower unit damage run it for several hours and then check the lower unit oil for water (milky) and for metal particles on the lower plug, which is magnetic. 99% chance everything is good. The gears are robust enough to shut the engine down without damage. My only concern would be as seasick mentioned damage to the lower unit seals, which would cause water intrusion.
 
Fishing line is typically a lot more damaging than rope. That stuff with get behind your seals and cut them. It's actually good to hear the motor was able to save itself from damage. I'd be curious if it shut down due to temperature or if it detected the locked shaft.

No damage or temperature problem so I assume it shutdown when placed in gear and couldn't turn the prop. No further problems with it after clearing the fouled line - trouble free for 25 hours or so.
 
i know this is old and you seem to be fine, but just thought i would add that i would expect the hub to spin before you damaged any gears
