Any one know or how to find out about what engines options would have been available for my 1982 Tournament 223? Presently, it has a tired 485 mercruiser but if I repower, I'd be thinking of upping the hp to that available from a 4.3 or even a v8. I know some mods would have to be made in the form of stringers and even the outdrive for the v8. Thanks!

i would give consideration to adding a bracket and going to outboard power. for a boat that old you will never get a fraction of the value of a new inboard motor back out and if that is the original leg i would be nervous about repowering on it.

I couldn't possibly consider going with a " new" engine for this boat. There are plenty of good used engines out there for a fraction of the cost. I can do the work myself, that's why I'd like to know what other engine options may have been available when this boat was manufactured! The mercruiser "470" didn't turn out to be a popular design. So, anyone out there with an early tournament 223 with an I/0 OTHER than the mercruiser 470/485/488/170/180/190 4 cylinder engine???

technically it's a 225 not a 223. it's also the same hull as a seafarer so you can extend your search to seafarers. there was also an extended hull 24' tournament and 24' offshore that was the same hull lengthened 2 feet.

if no one here can help you can check the grady site and download the 1980 era catalogues the i/o engine options might be listed. i will guess the i/o options were the same for the tournament and seafarer. you can also search for grady 22s with an i/o for sale from that era and see what engine combinations show up.
