Engine won't turn over. 1991 Tournament, 150hp Yamaha Outboard. I tried to start boat today and it won't start. I turn the key and nothing happens. Batteries are good and charged, Battery switch is on, safety kill clip is engaged, all electronics are working. I turn the key and nothing.

if the fuse on the motor was blown, it would turn, but not turn over..... ..if the batteries are good, as you say, and the battery connections are clean and tight, it sounds like a bad key switch which do break unexpectedly. Had a similar problem with an 86 Wellcraft-Yamaha...one day OK..next time bad ignition key switch. You can check the starter wires to see if you get power to that point...if not, I'd definitely look at the switch.

Try wiggling the shifter around. Could be the neutral safety switch.

your gauges turn on???

sounds like the NSS (neutral safety switch)
or starter relay
or fuse

got a test light?? or hand held meter

starter motor gear may not be engaging, frozen - in need of lube.

Check voltage to starter motor while going to start position. If no voltage key switch may have kicked bucket.

Welcome to the club. Its a bummer that this had to be your first post! Keep us posted on what happens!

Good Luck

Matt

I'm sure it's something simple, like in gear or throttle safety something . But I had what I thought was a good battery , that everything worked but it wouldn't turn over the motor.

Check the 20AMP fuse in the engine. Usually on the port side of the engine about 8 inches above the cowling and near the fuel pump.
