I need a new fishfinder and I have been looking at the Garmin 54XS and 440S GPS units. I want to spend aprox $500 and suggestions?

Garmin 540S was replaced by the the 541S. However, the price is going to be at least $700 with the transducer. The 440S has also been replaced with the 441S and it's price will be around $575. You may still be able to find the older models at a reduced price.

I have the 440s and love it. When I was looking over a year ago, I searched extensively on the internet and found Abes of Maine had the best price and reputation at the time. I used Garmin's stern-mounted transducer and never lose my depth readings, from idle to WOT - about 40 mph. The 540 series has a bigger screen and better resolution but for my uses, that doesn't justify the extra cost.

Be very careful when you shop around comparing prices because often the transducer is not included in the package. I found that buying the transducer separately was more expensive than the package deal and it's the same transducer.

I did a quick check at Abes and their prices for a 440s with transducer is $449 but has a 14 day availability. Try this link:

Although I haven’t used them, I hear that BOE Marine, http://www.boemarine.com/ has good deals and a good reputation for service. I’m in the market for a combo GPS/Fishfinder, but it probably won’t happen till next season. Good luck.

I have used BOE Marine for years and have always been more than satified with the pricing, the product and the after sales service. Jim runs a first class operation. He will beat all competitors with pricing too.
